I mostly fly-fish. I have fished from shore at my resort right at Puerto Morelos. We've been going to the same place for several years now. I always catch something and it's not like I spend a ton of time doing it. I'll go out every second morning for an hour or two. Earlier this year, a local was fishing with bait right where we were staying. He had a Grouper and a couple Snapper in his bucket. I asked him what he was using for bait and he said "sardina". Sardines, small cut pieces. Like most things, look for structure. A little harder in the ocean. Pier, dark bottom vs light bottom, etc.

Lots of locals fish off of the pier. Bait and hook is all they use. Didn't see anything big caught though. I'd bring some cranks and spoons and bait hooks. Basically, anything you can cast a good distance. Good luck!
