Nice Bull Pirate! You better stop posting pics of your secret bait though, once people find out that Lucky lager is the ultimate trout attractant, heads will roll!

Like the browner too, and the tuffy bow. Good work man, gettim in the pan! Well except for the bull of course!

Anyone have more info on this? I was told many years ago that when below freezing the fish eyes freeze and then they are blind for life. This is because they don't have eyelids to protect their eyes. This means that to release them unharmed the fish must be released in the hole while theirs eyes are still wet. Comments?

I think you've been mis-informed. I do think their eyes can freeze but you don't need to have them wet at all times. Depending on weather conditions, wind, etc, it may take minutes to freeze the eyes. At this time of the year, it probably wasn't freezing temps out when he was fishing and there is little to no risk at that.

If that was the case, no one should ice fish because fish would all be blind.

Do your eyes freeze when you ice fish? I am aware that fish are cold blooded, and we are warm blooded, but I think time is the factor here. I have seen fish eyes freeze after bonking them, in -35. Takes about 4 minutes.

CPR is the way to go, laying a trout on ice is better than dirt. Just not for more than a few minutes.

all the trout were quickly photo'd in +5C or warmer.

wet snow>rocks and sand

i love trout as much as anybody and if i had it my way i would lay out the red carpet or silk sheets for everyone i took a picture of.

unfortunately, that just doesnt work out for all my quick riverbank pictures.

No, my eyes don't freeze I have eyelids which protect and keep them lubricated. Ever notice you blink a little more when your out in the cold? Are you really aware? You THINK time is a factor here. Obviously your not 100% sure. After bonking maybe they freeze quicker because there is no warm blood flowing at that point. I thought i asked a civil question.

Why are you still here if your only goal is to pick battles? Best to let your fingers do the walking, and not your mouth. Fish are cold blooded.

Thanks for the input Cristy. Nice fish Pirate, don't let the goofs warm your beer up.

Well the eyes may definitely be an issue, but what about the fact that a large adult bull trout is laying on snow? That's something I don't like seeing, I'm surprised no one else has commented on it.

I agree, My friend is a fisheries biologist and snow in the gills and such is not a good thing to let happen.

Well, obviously, the guy in the first picture is wearing a jean jacket, and the second picture has a black chair in it. You should be ASHAMED.
