It is funny you say that as it is easy to get permission for this hunt. Regular season is a different story.

everyone we have asked said they were full or theyd call us if they had a cancellation. I guess maybe we should have made the trip down south and asked in person ,it may have helped

Article in the Herald also said that the 22 and 22x junction was NORTH of Calgary, and got the information about the primitive weapons requirement all screwed up. I suspect that the entire article was just as inaccurate.

To the OP,

Permission is still quite easy to get, but you need to ask in person. These elk move around with the hunting pressure, so be prepared to find the herds and ask for permission each day. Some landowners won't give permission when the elk are not the property, but are happy to have you hunt when the elk are there.

A very generic and somewhat anti-hunting bias to the article, and full of errors. The article isn't saying this herd is there Right Now, the Bio states it is in the area, as it usually is at this time of year.

There could also be some confusion as to which herd is being talked about. There are at least three large herds in 212, two in the south totaling over 700 head, and one in the NW totaling several hundred more which spends most of it's time in 312. The 312 thread vid I posted shows part of this herd.

Did they trap and move some or is the hunt a success was my understanding there was more like 1300 head?

Man that 212 looks like it pretty much surrounds calgary. What is there alot of private quarters to hunt on or hutterite land or what, looking on the map it looks pretty rural around there, actually must be alot of monster bulls too if theres that many cows

No there is no hoot land and you would be shocked that there is not alot of great bulls. So not bad ones but no real monsters as you would think. It has been a while since I have seen a 350 + bull in this zone. The best was a 340" last year. I played cat and mouse with him most the year till I shot a meat bull.

Default 212 elk

I've had that tag twice. It's frustrating but once you get some permission lined up it gets better. You need to get out early as they farmers keep running lists, get your elk then off the list you go and someone else goes to the top. Tr to get a strip of land tied up as the elk move all over (as elk do) and if you on,y have one spot they may never get onto your area. Anderson seem to have quit giving out permission the last few years and it's too bad too as their land seems to always hold the elk.

This is where a long range muzzleloader is the best implement to use, don't try with a bow as the landowners want the numbers reduced and it's definitely not a bowhunt. If I had to use a shotgun I'd have a scope on it and have practiced extensively. We were on snowshoes for 10 days last year so if there's snow you'll need those too.

Have fun!

I've had very good luck with this tag in previous years. However I have good relationships with landowners in the area. This next year will be interesting however as some good hunting land has changed hands and others are debating not allowing hunters this year. What I was surprised with, was not getting my 212 tag this year. It's always been a 1 year wait and this year I didn't draw. This may be due to many different reasons but a surprise none the same.

Try and get 312 access; it is virtually impossible.
