The cost certainly varies according to the size and remoteness of the place where it is going. In my experience, if the postal code of where I am shipping has a zero for the second "digit", that means it is a small/remote place and shipping costs will always be higher.
Costs are also higher for larger packages (length matters), round packages and of course, heavier packages. For a rifle, taking the action out of the stock and shipping in a shorter box should reduce the cost.
Find a box that will work and get an estimate of the weight and put all of that into the Canada Post rate estimator (be aware of Imperial versus Metric, so you don't put in inches for centimeters). I find my bathroom scale is fairly accurate for my estimates; if my package is not heavy enough by itself to register, I just put it on a heavier box, weight the two, remove my package to be shipped and reweigh; the difference is my package.
Good luck.
