Default Best single shot hunting rifle

Seems everyone really likes their Ruger #1s, just wondering if anyone’s had a similar experience with a similarly priced single shot, say a Browning B78.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The brownings are fine single shots, but the 1885 has a superior trigger than the earlier 78’s. And the low wall 85’s are sexier than their high wall brothers.

They typically have nice wood, the actions are crisp and positive, and they have an exposed hammer.

NEF Handi was best for these folks.

Best is a very relative term.

Best for what?
Looks?
Re sale?
1000 meter competition?
Hunting?

I’d say as far as hunting, you’ll find people allied in various camps promoting one make over another. If it’ll do 1”-1.5” at 100 meters, and the shooter is somewhat skilled, it’ll put meat in the larder. Make and model are about as distant as the type of sling you’d use.

Here my best single shot for to around 900yards.

Hunting accuracy, under 400yds, hard to argue with those results . Ruger 1# or equivalent, just seems everyone’s got a number one, just was wondering if there was something a little less mainstream in the same price range as the #1

Very nice pics DICK 284,the young guy has a smile that is pricless and young girl also.

You are very right on how you broke down the relative terms, also no better way and safer way than the use of the rifle shown in the hunts, one shot and make it count is the best way to learn ,if you get that thought process that the first shot is really your only shot you will accomplish many a hunt.

I love the Rugers, though I've yet to own one. I did have a beautiful Luxus from Prophet River. It was a gorgeous gun, very accurate, but alas it went down the road like all my guns do

I can’t think of a single instance with my children where they’ve ever taken more than a single shot at a critter....... even though that NEF has changed hands and left our possession, and they now have repeating bolt guns.

If I was looking for a falling block single shot :

If I had the choice between the B-78 and a Ruger #1 my choice would be based on the trigger of the 78. If it was a good one I would pick it over the #1.

The B-78 triggers are a complex piece and are extremely limited adjustment from the factory The B-85 are a better design . Brownings are usually more accurate and less finicky than the #1 due to the design of the forearm and hammer spring system.

All that being said I am a true #1 fan and have owned more of them

Pedersoli makes quite a few very nice single shot replicas of trapdoor guns, high walls, sharps rifles, etc...

Ruger #1's are nice rifles, no arguing that. But as for myself, I prefer those with external hammers. I had a beautiful Browning B78 in 30-06 that I liked very much. I ended up selling it because I felt uncomfortable crossing barbed wire fences, going through bush and scratching it on my belt knife. So I sold it and bought something utilitarian that I wouldn't cry over if I scratched it. Besides, my interests have migrated from hunting rifles to target rifles. Just a change in life priorities.

Great pics of the kids with their NEF's Dick. But I must question that 900 yard single shot with the "pinkish" stock. You sure that ain't Missus D's gun? It just don't seem to fit your persona!

Does anyone have any thoughts on the new Henry Single Shots? Talking with my local store it looks like they would sell for around $500.

It’s not pink! It’s red!

It entirely depends on what your expectations from your firearm are Matt. Do you wish for nice wood or a beautiful rifle? Do you wish for something utility? Or do you just want to have a "cheap" gun? Nothing is more frustrating than a gun that simply "sprays" bullets on target, for me at least. Consider that before buying. For me, tiny groups, consistency rocks my world. And I couldn't careless if the barrel is made of re-bar and the stock out of a fence post. If it shoots tiny groups, I'm interested. I'm a fan of Henry levers, and have as of yet no experience with the single shots that you speak of. Should you end up buying one of the Henry singles, I'd be interested in your range reports

I have 2 Winchester 1885, 405W and 375 H&H. Also have a No.1 in 275 Rigby. Tough call between the 1885 and No.1. I hunt with and shoot all 3, if I went to buy today I think the 375 H&H might win out. I might look at the new Henry when they come in, price on them is going to be way less then the others are now.

Accuracy without breaking the bank is where I am heading. Like the idea of the simplicity of a single shot. Nice wood would be a bonus, but I will likely scratch it up in short order.

If that 788 in .308 does not happen this summer when I have the cash, I may try one of the Henry's in .308. Reviews of the Henry's are slowly starting to trickle out, but I haven't read a range report over 50 yards.

Those 1885's in 375 HH look great. I saw one on the rack at my LGS.

I have shot and owned hundreds of single shots over the years, Stevens 44's,44 1/2's, Marksman12's, Haenels, Martinis, Sniders, H&R's Win1885's , Browning 1885's and 78's, Whitcliffes, Rugers, Baikals, the works.
I like them all, but the one H&R 158 I had in 30/30 had a really nice trigger and was accurate enough for anything from beavers to moose out to 100 yards.
it was an inexpressive rifle but worked very well for me.

I like the open hammered guns, but that being said , my main hunting rifle is a Ruger single shot- although it is a total custom not factory.

As far as single shot match rifles go, I have a soft spot for the old Musgraves 950T C.I.L.'s and Sportcos, just because .
None of them are pink however - not that there is anything wrong with that!!...

Default Any comments on the EABCO single

EA Brown lists a few singles - I thought the 6.5 BRM was interesting. Any experience with these?

Spot on. x2

If you have the money there are some truly outstanding single shots. Check out the customs by Martini and Hagen.

I have a TC Pro Hunter in 204 Ruger. Has reached out over 300 yards for coyotes. Out to 200 on gophers. Pigeons, magpies, crows, etc have all fallen for its charms. Barrels are easy to change. Missed a 25 06 barrel for it, which would have made it into a deer gun.

Have a NEF as well and like it.

Hahahaha.. I remember that comment being made before.....about 10 years ago maybe??

"Awesome shooting dick...but it still looks "pink" to me."

And he had the same reply then !!

Red...Pink..whatever. I'm not particularly picky Had the chance to shoot it myself and it is a damn accurate single shot

Default Winchester 1885 38-55

I’ve been hunting with the TC Encore, Pro Hunter, Endevour since 2005 and love the simplicity and universality of the barrel change option. Currently I’m shooting the 25-06 and 7mm RM. But just last fall I got my hands on a Winchester 1885 in 38-55 cal.
This single shot is dang accurate with 220gr jacketed and 250gr cast
