Default 6.5-06

Hey guys, I'm hoping I can afford to get a new big game rifle this year, I've been reading about the 6.5 creedmoor, I like the bullet selection available for that calibre, but I'd like a bit more punch. I'm thinking along the lines of 6.5-06. So, I'm wondering if anyone here has any experience with this wildcat, and who does top quality work? I'm a Remington 700 guy, I have nothing against tikka, I've used a few of them, but I find the Remington fits me better.

If I required another rifle in 6.5, this is what I'd get. Get a Krieger or benchmark barrel. Corlanes could bed it into a McMillen edge stock, you'd have a classy set-up

Thanks guys, corlanes did my 223 for me about 8 years ago, and i was very happy with it, but I've been told that the good gunsmith who used to work there went on his own?

I agree! Dennis will do your work in a reasonable time and very well. He built my 338-06 from a Rem 700 action. Most accurate rifle I own. Dennis is a real professional and won't bull**** you.

If you want more "Punch" look into the 6.5 Sherman. More work with brass prep but is about top performance other than a 264 WM or 26 Nosler. It will however run right with them. Mine shoots the 140 Berger at 3339 fps out of a 28" Hart. A 7 twist for the new Berger 155-156 gr would make for a deadly combo. All the Sherman LA are designed off the 270 Win as a parent cartridge.

Ok, Thanks, I wasn't aware of that, I'll definitely look into that.

I had a 6.5-06 in rem 700,ron smith 1-8 gain twist barrel on it.I used it for long range target shooting.I really liked the caliber and it shot really good but barrel life on them is around 1500.I would think it would last a life time if you were just hunting with it thow.Mine shot 140 bergers at around 2800 fps.I used 30-06 lapua and nosler brass necked down(270,280 brass will work also) and it lasted real well.I used Viht. N165 and H4831sc.
Good Luck

Is Dennis even taking much work these days? As to Corlanes, Rod has always been my go to guy there, and I have always been happy with the results.

You could go with a “non-wildcat” and get pretty much what you want with a .277-06 (also known as a 270 Win) or a .284-06 (also known as a 280 Rem). Both those standard SAAMI cartridges are pretty close to the 6.5-06 as all are based on the same 30-06 parent case. A straight 284 Win would also do the job nicely. Most gunsmiths will have reamers for each of those so it will give you more options in that regard.

I’d be more inclined to look at the 6.5 PRC

My brother has a 25-06, the drawback to that one is the very limited selection of projectiles. There seems to be a lot more options when you go 6.5mm, in 25cal seems like 120 grains is about as heavy as it gets, I prefer a heavier bullet that can carry enough energy down range to get the job done, rather than something the breaks light speed, but only pi$$es a gopher off when it gets there!

6.5-06 is pretty much the same as a 6.5-284. A 6.5-284 in along action allows you to seat the bullets out where they should be without being limited by mag length. If you want something faster 6.5-270wsm or 26 Nosler would work nicely as well. Get a 7 twist so you can shoot the new heavy bullets coming out.

I’ve toyed with the idea of a 6.5 X 284 but came to the conclusion perhaps the straight 284 Win might be a better choice?

What other big game cartridges do you own?

I run a 6.5-06. I love it, but Im also the first to admit that it fills a very small void.
Lots of other more practical cartridges that are very close performers... 280 for example.

Ron Smith is highly recommended. Personable and knows his stuff. Did a beautiful rebarrel job on my CZ 550 Mag with a gain twist 450 Rigby.
Also Bill Leeper in Elko B.C. , if he is still in the business.

I think the parent case for the 30-06 was brief production cartridge named
30-03?

My guns were stolen 2 years ago, had a rough couple years financially, finally starting to make a bit, so I'm looking for a gun for elk and black bears, I like the bow for moose, (rifle draw is a 5 year wait in my zone) I had enough guns for my needs before, but now I have to start all over! So I figured if I get an oddball that has to be custom loaded, at least if my favorite neighbor gets into my safe again, at least that gun won't be any good to him! And it'll cover a couple bases for myself, it's a small enough calibre that I can back off on the load and use it for coyote in winter without destroying the pelt.

Glad to see things are coming together for you. Congratz!

Honestly I would urge you to consider a 280 instead of the 6.5-06. I believe it is a more appropriate elk cartridge.

I speak from experience when I say you won't be saving any pelts with the 6.5-06. They will blast through at any range and you'll be sewing. TSX are your best bet to minimize sewing, and will perform the same in both cartridges.

I happen to be in the market for a 7 mag because Im looking for better performance on large game at longer ranges. If I didn't own the 6.5 I would be buying a 280.

Good luck with what ever you choose!

The 30-06 Family
.257 X 06 = 25-06.
.277 X 06 = 270 Win.
.284 X 06 = 280 Rem.
.30 X 06 = 30-06. (Parent case)
.35 X 06 = 35 Whelan.
Then the 06 was shortened to create the 308 Win. and it spawned:
.243 X 08 = 243 Win
.264 X 08 = 260 Rem
.284 X 08 = 7mm - 08
.30 X 08 = 308 Win (parent case)
.35 X 08 = 358 Win

Did I miss any of the “popular” cartridges? Lots to choose from.

I can’t tell you who to get yours built by, but mine has been my primary hunting rifle for 6 seasons now, and from 440 yard coyotes to big bull moose to 6x6 prairie elk it’s never let me down performance wise. 129 gr hornady interbonds and SSTs have given me excellent performance in both terminal and accuracy departments.
