Default My moose hunting plan for WMU 200

I had never hunted this zone so was quite excited when my lady drew a bull moose tag there. I made sure that I had not filled my white tail buck tag beforehand so that I could also hunt and maybe get one of those white tails that live in that zone.

That actually was not all that hard to do as I am the world's worst deer hunter - and that is after nearly 60 years of training to be a good deer hunter.

I took $200 from my pension cheque to pay any dude that I could find with an ATV that might be able to yard an unlucky bull out of the bush if my wife did connect with one.

I long ago decided not to pack them out on my back any more. If at all possible.

I had also decided, that if a rancher was kind enough to permit me to hunt on his property, we would certainly share the moose with the person. The last couple of times a rancher brought out a bull moose for me I made the same offer. The answer was always the same, 'We eat beef!'

But moose meat is not to be despised so I was hoping that the next rancher would take me up on the deal.

In 4 days we saw one porcupine, one sharptail grouse, two small white tail bucks, one or two little mulie bucks on posted land besides a hamlet, one rather frightened coyote, and no moose.

One day my beautiful wife, who is one year younger than me, walked over 7 miles in a bitter wind. The next day the wind was warmer but the same distance to check out the spots. I was so proud of this lady. When the trip was over she admitted that she had been ill for the entire time but never even mentioned it.

Did I mention earlier - I am also a lousy moose guide.

Sounds like some quality time well spent outdoors!

Oh, don't be so hard on yourself! You're in good company.

If it makes you feel any better I have a moose tag in 200 as well and for whatever reason they have gotten difficult this year. I hunted harder than I ever have during bow season and only ever saw 1 mature moose.

They were literally living in my backyard....right up until the season opened. Then they disappeared. And I don't think they were shot....I never saw a gutpile or drag marks? I regularly saw 9....

And I live just north of Cadogan.

We had four different bulls living on our land. I took one on opening morning, and the rest have disappeared like smoke in the wind. We usually see moose all season long; not this year.

Good luck, Scruffy! Hope you find a good one.

Default Moose in 200

I might take my lady up for a few days next week. If it was my bull tag I reckon that I would be there right now looking. I do not mind failing - but I have to try.
However my wife is a substitute teacher and is also looking after two younger generations of kin. So that keeps her rather occupied. Meanwhile .. I have the thousand yard stare ...

I wonder if I should just go back to the same area and hope a bull wanders out of the timber ..

My most memorable hunts are trips where you try and try and hope and get discouraged and hopeful again .

And then the bull/buck/big cat or whatever is in the cross hairs ...
