Default a challenging question is asked

If you are ice fishing and you see a hole in a lake. How can you safely take an accurate temperature whether it is + 10 Celsius out or minus 40 Celsius out.

I cant see to find anything that sells a pole mounted one or one on a rope or an infrared one that is promoted as working. Need it accurate to .1 degree if possible. must be durable and accurate so can't pull it our and drag through 5 feet of snow then read. Digital would be great. Having one of them really long window washing poles with a wireless probe and a phone app would be cool.

Anyone run across such a thing or any better alternative?

Another question, if there is a hole in the lake does all the water run out?

In most shallow lakes without stratification (or when fully stratified I guess) the temperature will be 4 degrees 12" below the ice and all the way to the bottom (+/- a quarter of a degree or so).

Just like in all deep lakes, the water will remain stratified and anything under the thermocline will remain 4 degrees year round.

A drone that could measure ice thickness would be something I would want. I searched google and couldn’t find such a thing.

But I am checking for fresh water springs.

ah - ok ..... so you are looking to measure warmer water coming off the bottom. That could be tough unless you can get something (like a fishing rod) to get "close enough" without getting on thin ice and lowering a temp probe maybe.

Just skid yourself along the ice in a small boat maybe.

Why do you have to do this in the winter?

I sourced out a spring in a private lake by just using a digital thermometer with the probe attached to a thirty foot cable, in the summer.

Besides temperature variances, you could look for current.
Water meter current readers can detect very low flows.

That's what buddy's are for. Like the red neck fish finder. Hang im over d edge while hangin on to his feet.
Guess it depends on how big the lake is or the drop if there is one. Finding the right temp makes a big dif on your catch. What temp the bait like, the eaters will follow.
