Default Why aren't ATVs street legal?

Seriously, why not?

IMO they are no different than a motorcycle or the new 3 wheeled Can-Am. I have a 20 minute drive to work and would certainly concider an ATV, especially one of the new side by sides, for that commute as well as any other short trips I have to make. What a great way to get around Edmonton in the winter. Who cares if it snowed 2 feet over night.

Just add signal lights and you should be good to go.

Your thoughts....

With proper signal lights and adequate insurance I'd have no problem with it personally. Heck, it would cut down on parking congestion, they're pretty much a Smart car minus the heated cabin, but with off road capability. I guess at that point though, they'd be required to have airbags and crash-testing to meet Gov't requirements. That would up their price a fair bit.

there is no reason they shouldn't be, but like most things a few idiots ruin it for everyone.

Agreed. I've always wondered the same. Adding signal lights, mirrors and big enough, running break and headlights should make them no different than a bike or moped.

If someone put the time, money and effort to challenge it, I'm sure it could be successful.

Can they get highway speeds? I know those scooters "Can" reach 100 km's. I have not been on a quad that and speedometer that goes that fast.

Golf carts and lawn tractors; stabilty at speed. I'd have no problem with snowmobiles either if equipped with signal lights etc.

Motorcycles don't have air bags?

How would/could it be challenged?

I was mostly referring to the side by side where the seated position and steering arrangement (you're in it rather than on it) would dictate classifying them with cars rather than motorcycles. Quads and the like where you mount the machine would fall into being treated like motorcycles, so they would have fewer legislated restrictions.

I know a guy in Edmonton that has a street legal tank

I think quads, with a few mods, would make a fine street legal vehicle. Especially in winter.

Yup, some people would get killed for sure, but that will happen regardless.

Parallel parkings a breeze when you can simply drive over the vehicles flanking your desired space!

Not that I'm a fan of more laws but they could be restricted to roads of less than X kmph. ....say 80?

Street legal........as in driving them in the city? It's not the right place for them IMO. It's already legal to drive them on RR's and TwpR's in some counties.

Many quads will do 60+ mph, raptors did 80+

They are legal in Montana, funny to see tearing around great falls.

Perfectly legal in Montana. I believe they require insurance, signal lights and mirrors. It would be great. What's the difference between that and a street/trail dual purpose bike?

In Greece you can rent quads for $30 a day. Ride the **** out of the roads! No insurance or license required.

My BIL owns a couple of driving schools in Germany and has a couple of quads to train people on. Once licensed they are only allowed to drive them on the streets but I don't know about cities. Someone I know bought a brand new Dinli (sp?) quad this year and it has all of the street legal goodies including horn, signal lights, license plate holder, etc. I think that it's manufactured in Taiwan and assembled in Germany.

To start with, you would need street legal tires. My 700 grizzly will do over 100km/hr, but I sure wouldn't ride it long at those speeds on the stock tires, as they have next to no stability. As well, with four wheels, the vehicle would have to meet all the standards that automobiles do, such as street legal brakes, bumpers, seat belts with shoulder harnesses, horn, signals etc. If you make exceptions for atvs, you would have to drop the standards for other vehicles.

Why would you need a seat belt on a quad.........there's none on a motorcycle?

But there are seatbelts on all four wheeled vehicles that are street legal. The same arguments that apply for making seatbelts mandatory in automobiles could be used with quads. but it wouldn't make much sense to have someone strapped onto a two wheeled vehicle that can easily fall over.

Motorbikes have none of these.
