Favorite bench side reference?

For all you fly tyers out, what is your favorite reference for tying flies?

Most of my flies come off the top of my head, knowing properties of materials goes a long way when tying flies.


Also, I'm a huge fan of Patent Patterns and Trout flies East of the Rockies. Those are two of my favorite books for inspiration when tying flies.

What books do you refer to when tying?

Sure the internet has alot to offer, but like most tyers out there, I enjoy collecting books about fly tying.

A book written by A.K. Best, titled "Production Fly Tying" is my go to guide.

Very well written, he is so good at explaining things. Lots of pictures.
I would recommend this book to any flytier.

I was glancing through a book at the new west side fishin hole called
The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying
it looks like a good book with step by step instructions for flies
and a how to section for proper handling and tying of materials.
A little expensive at $45 though.

The book I'm talking about is "The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference to Techniques and Dressing Styles". it Contains no patterns just how to use various materials, hard cover. Written by Jim Schollmeyer and Ted Leeson. It list for about $99, but you can usually find it for $70 or so if you look. A lotof my tying students buy it after seeing my copy.

Also worth having are "Charlie Craven's Flybox", "Charlie Craven's Basic Fly Tying", "The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying".

For him, a bed side reference would have to include Lady Chatterly's Lover for the extensive information on game keeping. For her, I'm told that Fifty shades of grey will turn the lights out fast.

I use this one, as an amateur it is perfect because of the in depth information of several tying techniques . It is written by Leeson and Schollmeyer as well. Love the book.
