Default Hike-in fishing near Canmore?

Hi Fellas,
Does anyone know of any lakes or good stream fishing that a guy could hike to in the Canmore area?
Any info would be appreciated.

MM

There are a few in the area. Depends how long of a hike you are looking for. Something like Chester Lake is a great day. I have trail maps for that area of thr rockies if you need.

Lillian lake or then up to Galetea lakes is a good trip too. The trail head is just south of Mt Kidd RV park on Kananaskis trail. An excellent senic hike and decent fishing too. You can camp up there as well.

I believe the seasonal closure for the trail is still in effect, but yeah, it's a great little hike and a nice backcountry campground.

Other ones you might like are Ribbon Lake, PickleJar lakes, and Tombstone Lakes. They're all in K-country. About an hour drive out of Canmore.

True, think it opens end of June, we've been on that hike there on July 1st weekend. Not much for fish then, better to go in August.

Well, that's a great starting point. Time to pour over my topo software maps.

Thanks for the information.

Gemtek makes some really good maps of the area. That's primarily what I use.

Gillian Daffern's Kannanaskis trail guide books are excellent too. (2 volumes)

Great books but I've been trying to track another set down for a couple years now and can't. Do you know if they are back in print?

yep, they've been reprinted a few times. If I can get my hands on a set, want me to pick them up for you?

The books are at most Chapters..

As for the lakes only the lower bottom of the Valley lakes are open.
As for the hike in lakes the trails still have snow and many of the lakes are still covered in ice.

When are u going ?

They're pretty popular, never had a tough time finding them. I work in the beltline downtown Calgary. I have to stop at a few construction sites today, so I'll pop into MEC and pick a set up for you if you like and either meet up with you or mail them.

Thanks a bunch. Let me know if they are there. She was supposed to bring out a new version in Spring 2008 and I've yet to be able to find them. The first printing has long since sold out. You can't find them on-line anywhere. I gave my set away thinking they would be easy to replace and I haven't been able to since.

These are the books right?

I even talked several times to the publisher last year and they were sold out as were all retailers. I haven't looked this year. Hopefully they are back in print.

Yep, those are the books. I haven't really been looking too hard since I have copies (not the 2008 version) but I seem to recall seeing them at the boulton creek store in K-country and at MEC here in Calgary. Will let you know what I find.

Much appreciated.....I looked everywhere last year to no avail. Chapters on-line still lists them as sold out but hopefully.........

I have her first trail guide printed in 1979....learned many good fihing holes and sheep spots out of that book. She also came out with a book of day hikes last year but there wasn't much in it.

X2 - pretty surprised, but yeah, can't find them anywhere! Went to MEC and nuthin. I'm guessing that when the new version comes out there will be more available.

There were a few decent trail books, that I already have, but nothing as good as the ones we're looking for.

I think I saw some online through amazon.com

I like Galetea...lots of little cutts...careful of the time of year to make sure there is no ice and check the regs.

Also most lakes have "bear" warnings...there are lots of bears in the valley.

Ya, new ones were scheduled for release in spring 2008 but still nothing. I've checked both Amazon and Indigo with no luck.

Crap, now you got me thinking I need a set too. ;-)

BTW, I found some on Amazon... 1 new for US$ 122 or so (just for part I) , used starting at $35.

If you REALLY want them.... ;-)

Frans

Not for $122....lol but if you do see a set that is reasonably priced, that would be great if you grabbed them. I've basically given up and was hoping the new ones would be out in 2008 as promised. I heard that her husband might be ill so that could have delayed things. I've still got her original one volume book but it is missing a few trails that are in the two-volume set. Interstingly, there were way more references to what animals she saw in the first edition but I guess too many hunters were using the info so she didn't include it in the second edition. She doesn't like hunters.....lol
