Brookies are super aggressive and love stickleback minnows and anything minnow looking. In lakes/ponds they tend to find the spots with current as they are a ravine species and are naturally found in streams. Or at least that's what the majority of what I have read about them has said.

I have had a fair bit of success using a couple different methods when going after brookies on the ice. I usually set up in about 6-10 feet of water and can watch them come and investigate the show.

The first is using a williams gold/silver spoon and hanging a bait from it. I take the hook off and tie on about 6-8 inches of flouro and then put the treble back on and tip it with either minnow heads or worms or gulp trout bait. Or a combo of either whichever works to make them bite. I have a home-built hook setter that is dynamo for that setup. I call it the sniper cause it never misses. Works fantastic for pike with a quick strike/minnow setup as well. Here she is in all her glory:

The second way is jigging the small northland tackle's mimic minnow soft plastic jigs or the small cicada jigs. Bounce them off the bottom a couple times, pull up a foot or so off the bottom and wait 5-10 seconds. If something doesn't come check it out give it a rip up once or twice, let it fall back to just off the bottom and hold again. Works very well for me. I have also used the soft plastic scuds from northland as well with pretty good results. Anything small and bug/minnow looking has worked in the pas as well.

Good luck and I hope this helps

Where we icefish for them jigging a very small lure out fished dead sticking a bait about 50 to one. Right now they are shallow 4-6 feet. They seem to really like nailing an active bait

Thanks guy's I will try some of those out.
I am getting tired of seeing fish all day just looking at wondering off. story of my life on this lake. I have no problem sighting 20+ in a day. but getting them to do more then taste and spit, then wander off seems to be my trouble.

Had lots of luck this early ice season sightfishing in shallow water (3-8 feet) with a small jighead and the small, one inch shiners from Cabelas. Jigging the minnow and dead sticking it both produced.

Edit- the jigging method that worked best for me was pulling it up a couple feet and letting it flutter down, thats when they'd hit.
