plane crash sylvan lake 80s?

had a story told to me about 2 guys in a biplane a bunch or years ago crash into sylvan lake .anyone hear of this?i cant seen to find anything on it.the storyteller is a buddy of mine and i dont want to call bs on this just yet ,(apparently he was there)

Yup, I was there too. Only it was not a biplane, it was a doghouse and Snoopy was flying it! The bi-plane was being flown by Manfred von Richthofen and he shot down the dog house! Tragic! I think von Ricthofen landed in Penhold, back when the airforce owned it!

Haha, glad to see you have a sense of humor.
Honestly, lived in and around Sylvan my entire life and although I have heard rumors of Ogopogo-like pike and Camp Kanawin human sacrifices, I never heard any urban legends of planes going down in the lake.

There have been a lot of plane crashes in Alberta and I would not be surprised to hear that one did end up in Sylvan lake. If there had been one being the depth of that lake would make retrieving it and all inside relatively simple.
I have come across a lot of point of interest markers here in central Alberta which tells there story. You would also be surprised to know that a lot of them crashes were from American Air Force planes.
In the peak of it day Penhold was a big hub of activity.

If memory serves me correct, there is one in there, right next to a kids playground set. 10yrs ago I used to go diving in the SW corner of the lake and there was a bit of a dive park set up there underwater.

Not Sylvan Lake but a plane crash in Alberta me and the boys quaded to. My boy is the one with the black shirt. He took a 600 Polaris up there. hehe

There is another crash site up at memorial lakes in K-country. One plane went down, and then I believe a rescuer plane went down as well. There's a plaque up there to remember those that lost thier lives.

They had engine problems and went down.

Man that was a long time ago. I don't remember the year it happened but I do remember it.

Should be able to find something in the archives of the Red Deer paper

The fuselage of a Cessna was "placed" in Sylvan Lake at the underwater playground in the 1970's. It's in about 30' of water. I've never heard of any other wreckage in the lake. Unless it crashed and they fished it out, i don't know.

The plane wouldn't be in the lake it was hauled out so Transport Canada could look at it.

Galatea Lake is up there. stunningly gorgeous even with 3 feet of snow in July,,, good fishing too, Terrifying terrain.

Planes crash all the time.

our place was barely missed by one that broke up and scattered debris, over a couple of miles. Similar cairns, just west of Cochrane, on the 1A and and near Bryant lake. Few years ago, we were driving up to the Cut off creek staging area, there was a pile of at least 10 or 12 wrecks, at the side of the road. they must have been cleaning them up, to avoid confusion in future searches. Closest one to Sylvan I can remember, was just north of, within sight of Lesleyville, about that time. It made Reader's Digest.

The emergenency locator beam was picked up by a Russian satelite, who alerted the Americans in San Francisco, who in tern passed the information to the Canadians in Comox. They in turn, notified the Rocky fire department. Couple of hours and they were on the scene.

During the war, the Americans flew several thousand planes, to Russia, along a route that went from Great Falls , through Edmonton, Fort Nelson and Fairbanks. A number just dissappeared and were never seen again. Some of them might be lying at the bottom of your favorite Lake.

Don't have them, but if you go to the summer village on the west side of town, follow the road till the end (small cul de sac) there used to be a trail down to the lake from there. In probably 18ft of water about 50yds out.

I don't know if it's used anymore, this is 10+ years ago. At the time, the neighbours hated all the divers parking cars on the road etc.

Thanks! I'll check it out, i always heard about a playground that was out there somewhere but nobody knew where it was. I am sure something large would hold to that structure??

It was my uncle and his buddy (friend of the family) that were killed in this Sylvan Lake plane crash. Happened in the summer of 1984. They were both 24 years old and born and raised in the Eckville area.

I was born the following year in 1985 and inherited his dirtbike and guns growing up. Though I'd share that with you guys.
