Default New to fly fishing

Hi all.

I just got back from Van Island where a buddy of mine got me into fly fishing. Always wanted to try it, but never got around to it till now. After catching a whack of salmon there, I can see why catching on the fly is so much fun.

Anyway, now that I'm back in Calgary, I'd like to keep my practice going on the fly rod I bought out there. Any suggestions on where to go around Calgary? Within an hour or so drive is what I'm looking for. I'm not asking for specific spots, cause I know even attempting to ask for that would be like asking for the arm of your first born. Lol. So a general area is fine.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Nikola

Nikola, pretty much any of the streams and rivers in this part of the province will have some fish in them. Around Calgary, you might try Jumpingpound or Fish Ck. The Elbow River West of town also has some great fishing if you read the water right.

It's a 4/5 weight Switch rod. Guy I bought it from out there it would be perfect for the Bow...

Switch rods are often rated differently than traditional one handed fly rods, providing that's the case here, it will most likely be perfect for the bow.

What make, model, and length is your switch rod?

Edit: my switch rod is a Peiroway E1166 (11'6" 6wt). It is rated like a traditional fly rod and not a Spey rod.

Either I'm blind, or I there isn't a company name on the rod. Lol. I wouldn't put the blind thing past me though. Lol. The only markings on the rod says = Switch 11'6" 4/5 weight. The combo I bought came with a Snowbee reel though.

I'm unfamiliar with the brand of reel, but when I looked it up it appears to be nice quality. All of the Smowbee reels are machined from solid bar stock aluminum, which is something I personally require in my reels.

The rod could be anything, but it is most likely weighted like a Spey rod (especially at that length). In that case, it should play like a 6/7 weight: which is awesome on the Bow for chucking bigger stuff.

I only really use my switch for streamers and bigger wet flies. I don't use it for nymphs and dries.

There used to be a Spey group that met on the Bow quite regularly. You might like to check the Fly Fish Calgary Forum in the Spey Casters' Lounge to see if the group is still active. The outings were planned by "Toolman."
