My buddy came over yesterday and we did a ladder test for his dad's. 300win then loaded a pile of .270wsm.
I prepped and primed 106 mixed head stamp .243 the young fella is gonna eat up my primer stash shooting his rifle.

Finally "finished" (a bit more to do) free floating and bedding a Santa Barbara Model 98 that I have had for many, many years.
The rifle came to me bedded in something like Acraglass and with the barrel bedded full length.
As I came to learn after trying to sight it in on several occasions, it would tend to go for a walk as the barrel heated up so sighting in was a three shot only deal.
I once missed a really nice WT buck, having spent quite a bit of time at the range, only to fire at him and have a clean miss. Went back to the range and was not even on the paper.
Being a 98, it's sort of pillar bedded as the forward action screw goes through the front part of the magazine and creates a metal to metal contact with the bottom of the recoil lug, the back end is a simlar arrangement with a "pillar coming off the back of the trigger guard and butting against the bottom of the the trigger itself.
Anyway, much dremelling and sanding, cleared all the old stuff out and rebedded the recoil lug and the front of the action up to where the barrel taper just starts.
Did this with JB Weld. Others have opined that it is too sloppy but I found the texture/consistency to be good. I had some West System 403 on hand to mix in if it was too sloppy but ended up using it without.
Used sno-seal as a release agent - worked great! (beeswax and paraffin - what's not to like?)
The bedding job came out great and am now able to pass a business card (the ever handy 10 thou measuring device) full length of the barrel.
Off to the range with an assortment of ammunition of various head stamps and vintages. First results were not promising however...
Finally used some of the Barnes factory ammo that I hunt with (at $3.00 a poke) and surprise! can now shoot a cloverleaf at 100 yds with this rifle.
This is something that it was never able to do previously.
So next steps, adjust the trigger weight, replace the recoil pad with a limbsaver and develop a Barnes load for it (or just use it for hunting and shoot factory Barnes - but where's the fun in that)
All in all a very satisfactory result!

Did some cartridge a animation of some fired rounds and factory brass on sdvc's #5 Jungle carbine, interesting !
The shoulder on the fired rounds is a full .123 forward of the factory brass!
Hand loads will tell the tale tomorrow.
Also setting up a bunch of .223 for our Spring long range irons match next week, that is going to be fun!

Some load work on a two different bullets with 2 different powders for a new 6.5 creed.
Hopefully a range day after work today to test at 300m.
Finding any kind of load data with COAL was proving fruitless, so I just went with max mag length as lands was way too long. 140gr RDF and 130gr VLD.

I had the same issue with my 257wby. Finally I just seated a 110 accubond out to fit the mag and I’m still .200 from the lands. I’m getting fairly consistent groups in the .7 range at 300 yards so plenty good enough for me.

Well, thanks to the snail pace speed of Canada Post, my Match Kings have not arrived in time for our shoot, I am loading some Bergers in the RPA instead of using the Musgrave that I have been practicing with !

Yea, that just ......!
Was out for ladder testing and realized the 4 loads I was testing all were short of reaching max. Threw a bunch together last night to test on the higher end.
Taking out a new shooter Sat. Wants to get into hunting/shooting. Man he is going to have a blast shooting my selection or toys. See how he does and get him to shoot out to 1000M if things work out. That should get him hooked for good.

Finally got the chance to break in the new Tikka CTR 6.5 PRC. I did the shoot 1 clean 1 for the first 13 rounds with factory precision hunter ammo. Velocity on the box says 2960. I averaged 2770 on those first 13 rounds.
I then tried some test loads from 54 to 56.5 gr of Reloader 26 with Lapua brass, 210m primers and a 143gr eldx. Best group was .332” with 55.5 gr but the velocity was only just over 2800. With 56.5 it was only at 2870. Just finished cleaning the gun and I’m going to load some with 57gr to 58.5.
I’m not sure why but every Tikka I own with factory barrels are very slow.

Took the '06 to the range today...giving 130 gr ttsx a whirl.
Loads ranged from 52.5 to 56.5 of Varget (max load from Barnes).
Groupings were a bit frustrating with 2 shots touching and 1 shot out by 1" in many cases.
No pressure signs whatsoever. I broke out the Chrony for the last group @ 56.5 gr and to my surprise the velocity averaged 3365, with a 24 ES. That's about 150 fps faster than Barnes published results from a 24" tube. Should I be concerned or happy that it's running this quick?

I just noticed how much I’ve shot since December of last year. I need to load 1200 rounds in seven different calibers to get myself caught up to where I was in November.
Well….I guess I am retired now.
Well, off to a good start. De-capped and cleaned 400 cases. Sized and flared 200 straight walled cases. Sized, primed, charged, and seated a hundred precision rounds.
Only about 1100 more to finish.

Just plinking rounds from range pick-up brass.

I reloaded some 420 grain cast for my 458 mag, I'm taking the Model 70 Super Express for a bear hunt tonight.
I'm going to bush bash a bit and see if I can flush a blackie out for my son, he's packing the 30-06 I sold him a while back.

Cleaned up a pump 12 and a Sako 7 mag for a friend, did a few maintenance things to the Sako, and loaded some test rounds for it for some load development.

Packing up excess stuff to take to Hanna gun show to sell. They still have some extra tables there. Various odds and ends that have been left over from guns that were sold years back, a few things that I bought to try out and didn't like. Amazing what a person acquires over time.

Swapped out the sights on my short range 1:7 .223 mouse gun because I can't read the fine graduations on the scale anymore and the front sight is a fixed high mount for 500 meters and closer.
Put a Mo's front ladder on it and a rear Central so I can run my 80.5 Bergers out to 900 meters confortably .
Worked out great .

I loaded and chronographed several sets of 200 gr ELD-X bullets for my 300 Win mag. I settled on a load that gave me 2950 fps, SD of 4, ES of 8. Those are really great numbers in a 300! Next trip is to the range for accuracy tests.
