I would stick with the #3 Bridgers all the way, the MB650 is a little over-powered for the Canadian trappers, I don't like the over size pan of the MB nor the triggering mechanism/adjusting. If I was going to use the MB I would want to double laminate the thing minimum 3/16" + 1/4" to tone down the 4 #3 springs.
Now if the MB650 came with the same pan/trigger assembly as the MB550, you would suddenly have a very desireable creation, but would still be kind to tone down the springs with extra wide lamination.
I used the MB550 during the Canadian testing of which it passed with flying colours. For a small trap, it is my #1 pick. If the 650 followed its template, you likely would have ended up with a sweet trap.
We tested the MB650 twice, once double laminated 3/16" + 3/16" as well as the cast jaw model. Neither trial was successful. That extra little lamination is soooo necessary.
