Default Another Suffield Thread? Not what your thinking, Q&A thread

So 45-70 sapper had asked a question about the base, road conditions and tires. Not wanting to hi jack his thread it got me thinking we should have more of a Q&A thread so one doesn't have to search 10 plus pages of the other threads. So I assume lots of applicants have the same questions and maybe we can get them answered here. So if you have a question about hotels, the base, the hunt etc, post them and hopefully the guys who have been there will be able to answer them.

Here is mine, can you get out and walk bush areas like at Wainwright? I'm not sure as the few photos i see it looks like more open prairie. I hear there are some parcels of bush but some are off limits.

Medicine Hat is the best place to grab a hotel room, should a guy be worried about vacancies? So if your one of the lucky ones to be drawn, is it pretty easy to get a room a couple weeks in advance?

Default suffield

you can walk it, but most of it is rolling prairie hills. not really any bush. there are lots and lots of trails to drive. not sure on the rules but think if you stay to roads and trails your fine. pretty sure they don't want you driving off trail because of live ammo that may lying around. also you dont wanna hit a set set of tank tracks that are hidden in snow. believe me your pickup wont survive if you hit them hard. hotel shouldnt be a problem in the hat but wouldnt be bad idea to book your room

If the tank tracks are like some i have seen in Wainwright, i don't doubt you will be in trouble if you hit one under the snow.

Never been on that base and would like to get an Idea from others that have hunted there before what to expect. Do you keep driving around till you see some Elk then try to get close for a shot or are there wooded areas that you actually get out and hunt.

When hunting Suffeild Elk, is it a good idea to let the elk run away as far as possible before shooting to avoid meat waste from a close shot?

no not at all. I've recently purchased a M107 .50 cal Sniper Rifle and am wanting to see if i can close on a 2000 meter shot. There's not much hunting area in Alberta that you can attempt that.

You will need to find a leaseholder, private landowner, or motel that allows overnight parking, not much for public land camping areas.

not every post needs a post about it. the guy was playing dumb or he's serious either way if he ends up shooting an elk at 2000m i'll watch the youtube clip
