Default Bear Fat Blueberry Pie

My wife & I made this blueberry pie. Made the crust with rendered bear fat from my sons spring bear. This is the most tender, flaky and absolutely delicious pie crust ever! First time rendering bear fat, but definitely not the last. I’ve missed out for years lol!

When I guided bear hunters 30 years ago, an older lady would come into camp and get GALLONS ( 100,s) of lbs of bear fat for cooking.
Heard many compliments on her cooking.

My wife ordered up a fat bear for precisely this purpose (and a bear rug, for an entirely different purpose ) So them bears are in some trouble this year. What’s the average amount of lard you get from a normal sized fall black bear?

Lots! You could probably get 4 gallons if you took it all.

I was over with Bucksnbears three years or so back and we took a huge bear, we scraped 2 overflowing 5 gallon buckets of fat off that bear and it didn’t look like we’d even stared trimming it out.
There is a lady near my bear camp who takes the fat for lard as well. Everything she bakes with that lard is incredibly good. None better.
