Default Giving away wolf hides with bullet holes?

I'm planning on doing some cougar hunting this winter by calling them in, and imagine I'm likely to see wolves before I ever see a cougar.

If I can legally do so, I'd like to shoot the wolves both for the experience and to help the local ungulates. I'll be using 308 win for the cougar, while my friend will have a 7.62x39mm for a backup gun, since we'll be calling predators to us about 4 km from the road.

If I take a wolf, I have to salvage the hide, but I'm a student and won't be able to afford the expense.

Does anybody have any experience with giving away frozen wolf hides? Would anybody want them if they'd been hit with something like a CXP2 308 win?

Also, would it be smart to draw up some sort of simple transfer of ownership receipt? Or am I responsible for the hide until it gets tanned?

Right?!

I have never hunted cougar, but I spent a lot of years looking for one to photograph.

I don't even want to tell you the lengths I went to... but I can assure you that I did everything but stand on my head and spit nickels.

Never saw one until a few weeks ago. Ran right across my road one kilometre before the entrance to my driveway.

As for the legality of selling them I'm not too sure. If its legal i would be happy to buy them off of you.
As for the cougar hunting, watch your backs and best of luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm guessing that you can only sell them once they're tanned? But you could give them away untanned...and to the OP...a cougar called in on video would get you a tremendous amount of bragging rights here on AO if you're catching my drift aha

It is in BC. Not sure about Alberta. And they are paying bounties on them in some areas. You should call a local trappers association to see if they will buy them.

Selling of hides and animal parts isn't governed under provincial law it is governed under federal law. The provinces just enforce it. If it is tanned a person can sell what ever he likes up to a certain amount with grizz hides iam pretty sure looked it up a couple years ago. A person in there lifetime can sell as many black bear or wolf hides or any kind of hide but has to go thru a registered taxidermist first if not has to be given away as the law states. U will find all information on federal website not provincial.

Lol thanks guys. We're heading into this knowing that our chances of harvest are pretty low. It's more about the chance to hunt such great predators, and in somewhat difficult conditions. 8km of xc skiing roundtrip with a cargo sled, along with a couple hundred meters of elevation gain on snowshoes, followed by a very alert period of mouth calling on the treeline. We go snowshoeing, xc skiing, and shooting in the winter anyway. Would be pretty cool to wrap them all up together.

I've gotten wolves on trail cam within 20km of this location, and we were approached by a cougar in the area too. It's pretty good country. Poplar heavy riparian habitat with windswept hills ringed by forest rising above. Lots of edge, and lots of moose and elk sign around. Pretty good deer populations for the area as well.

Just make sure you call the Cougar line to ensure the zone is actually still open before you go hunt.

It says right in the trapping regs that anyone can legally sell a legally harvested raw pelt to a licenced fur dealer. If you want to sell it to a private person then it needs to be tanned.

Last year my fur buyer was paying upwards of $25 for a prime whole frozen coyote. Whole frozen prime wolf would pay for your gas I bet.

to Those of you who think you cannot call in a Cougar here is a example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrzbqiurbus

on calling them in if you have Elk in your area then I would use a Elk reed and do a distress Elk call.. works for me just beware that every predator will come that's with in hearing distance

enjoy

Cool video! Pretty sure you are not allowed to call Cougars with electronic callers though, for harvesting purposes anyway unless they have changed the rules. Picture taking purposes are fair game though!

I have called a couple of Cougars in while coyote hunting using mouth calls. One was on crown land and out of season so he lived to tell the story, and the other was on private land. The land owner I was calling for had the privilege of capping him.

It can be done!

Default Cougars

We've called in Cougars by accident I'm sure you can do it on purpose but I'll still say good luck on that one. I talked for a couple hours on the phone to the foremost cougar caller in the states and he figures that withouth electronic calls it's extremely difficult to call them and actually be able to see them. He says that apparently and obviously to me too, they come in but won't commit and so we rarely see them. If we were allowed to use electronic callers it might be worth buying a liscence.

The ones I had come in came to a moving decoy while I called. Obviously they knew something wasn't right, but both were shootable. I also knew both were in the area when I set up, which helped the situation dramatically. Not knowing they were there and just going to a random spot definitely makes it incredibly tough.

I'm sure you will have no problems putting any wolf hides you might harvest, but keep me in mind for a skull. Would love to euro one.
