This was the fella that used bird shot, was on his deck then went down to scare the bear off, I believe if memory serves me correct it also had cubs, he got off unharmed....dork.

In the old days trappers and gold prospectors used the shotguns with bird shot to deal with many bears. At real close range it leaves a pretty big hole in Any animal. However slugs much better, can shoot before you smell bears breath.

Way too much information missing

I can tell you for a fact many bears have been stopped with a shotgun during both recovery and self defense. Loaded up with proper ammunition and shot placement still play a role

Shooting bears with bird shot as a nuisance deterrent made some real peed off bears for the next person they encountered in their travels. Imagine walking around with a whole bunch of little lead pellets under your skin, festering away ?

I carry a short barreled shotgun loaded with 00 and slugs. Can't accuse me of long range sniping if I have to use it.

I shot a problem Black Bear for a landowner I knew many years ago. 12 gauge with 00 Buckshot. About a 20 yd shot. He dropped immediately but was thrashing around. A slug was the next round into his chest. That finished the job. When I skinned him I found a pellet in his neck, spine, back foot, guts and butt. The rest missed. What I learned from that is Buckshot is only good for very close range. My gun had a smooth bore slug barrel.

I read somewhere that some guides in Alaska use #2 shot because of more pellets.

I actually remember this clip now it was in Bella coola and it was bird shot. The old guy actually went out of the house to try and get the bear to leave his property

He made some bad choices and luckily lived

Know a guy who had a bear having a good time in his chicken coop. 1 blast of buckshot was all it took. I would have no hesitation using a shotgun with the right load. A single blast of bird shot at distance is not the right load.

Oh absolutely! I definitely prefer the proper ammunition over using the end of the barrel of my shotgun as a rangefinder loaded with bird shot any day of the week.

Bear defense threads are always entertaining. No shortage of opinions.

These threads definitely can be entertaining, I can agree with that. But maybe some of these opinions are of real life experience.

I had to use my bow once while hunting with my 6 month pregnant wife beside me....never again!!
With just a bow and I had a perfectly suitable rifle in camp at the time. Lesson learnt lol!

A 12 gauge with 2-3/4” or 3” magnum slugs is pretty deadly on bears at close range from my past experience.
I don’t have any experience with buckshot though so I can’t comment….

I wouldn't trust any type of shotgun load until you have taken it to the range and tested point of impact and pattern. My 870 with a short barrel was 12" high at 25yards with slugs.

Point made is always range test your rifles/guns etc....

I have a shotgun loaded in sequence, target load first (noise deterrent), followed up with 2 rounds of bird shot, and slug last. Never had to un cork it, knock on wood!

Nice part of short barreled shotguns is they are about as close to a handgun as our idiot government let's us carry, the bad part is you don't want to carry it with one in the chamber. I've got a 12 " pump that perpetually tries to point itself at me.

Default Pattern shotgun

As stated above, make sure to pattern your shotgun to see what you are up against. My short barrelled defender style 12 gauge throws buckshot everywhere other than into the target!!! On the other hand, I can hit a pie plate consistently with a slug at 50 yards with the open ghostring sights!?

Serious question; what would a 12 gauge slug do that a well constructed 180 gr bullet from a 30-30 not do? I find a lever action 30-30 as easy to carry and point than a 12 gauge pump. I’ll concede that a pump is faster to reload and maybe less apt to short cycle.
