Default I wish we had more turkeys in Alberta

Just got back from a quick trip to Ontario where I tagged out after a few days (2 tags over the counter for Canadian non resident) thought I'd post my birds, would love to see some pics of some Albertan meriams and am curious if the hunting style is much different in Alberta compared to Ontario. That's awesome!

I was able to join my sister for a Turkey hunt last Monday when I was there for a brief visit.

The ACA is working to transplant BC "problem birds" to Alberta - I hope that helps our population here!

https://globalnews.ca/news/9540804/s...20in%20Alberta.

We didn't get any birds, but she did gift me a really nice handmade box call.

Congrats, nice bird! Yep, lots here in Ontario for sure, I see them all the time.

Given the choice, I'd rather have gophers to shoot than turkeys but I get the appeal.

Great job. Nice birds. I'd like to try some of that jerky. Do you use any flavor?

Nice Tom. I wish we had a better population here in Alberta too. I’d rather hunt turkeys every spring than chasing black bears just to scratch that hunting itch.

I’ve killed a few Merriams in BC, patiently waiting for my first Alberta Merriams tag but would love to see more birds here. We have the habitat along the Chinook belt to support birds we just need the initial investment to translocate Merriams here to kickstart and grow the small population we do have. ACA just did a survey of existing turkeys within Alberta and there were less I thought there would be.

We have lots of turkeys in BC. Most of them can be found in the lower wasteland, er Vancouver/ Victoria.

Do you guys mind if we ship some of them over to Alberta?

I would love to see more, but I think the inconsistency of the climate is a problem.

I am hearing they are almost gone in the Cypress Hills, apparently cougars are hard on them.

Likely more to it than cougars

Lots of cougars in southern B.C. and the turkey population thrives

Predators are no worse than southern BC, sure the environment is a little colder but snowpack levels are no worse than Wyoming or Montana, we just never had a large enough transplant to cause a rapid growth, poaching was also a problem. Talked to a rancher down by pincher whose Native tenant shot 3 this year so far, also knew a rancher by Turner Valley who had a flock show up and then killed them all because they bothered his chickens.

I remember lots of birds in the Porcupine Hills. Back in the 90s, they were everywhere in 305. Have not been back there for a couple years. I am assuming by the post that the numbers have dropped?

Default 4 days

305, 4 days and saw 4 turkeys on day 1. Not much luck and no gobbling activity at least not for me to hear.

Been scouting for a month in 4 different WMUs and spent the last 5 days trying to find one with my daughter. First gobble ive heard in that time was yesterday from a highly protected bird surrounded by miles of no hunting signs lol

Cypress Hills is a small area, birds cannot move far, plus the cougar density is higher than BC.

Must be one hell of a cougar population

I have only seen Cypress hills on a map so I can’t really say I have much knowledge on the area
