Default E tags

Anyone opt for the E tag option this year and if so did everything run smooth when you went to "fill your tag"?
I went for the e tag option this year it will be less cumbersome than the wires.
I have not been able to get out this year due to work but hopefully that will change soon.

Default It went OK

To fill your tag you have to do it by filling out the harvest report for the draw.
It took me a little bit to figure it out.

That's good to know!

I thought I would try the e tag system as I think this will become the more common way to track your harvest in the future.
It would be very untimely to have an app failure when you got one in the boat. I would assume the CO would not care as I am sure they have heard every excuse in the book as to why your walleye was not tagged properly with the wire and sticky tag.
I am sure they are prepared to hear all the electronic excuses this year as well.

I was shore fishing a few years ago at the Pigeon Lake campground boat launch. There were about 15 anglers there. I caught one B class and proceeded to get the wire and tag on. I guess someone did not like the fact I kept one or thought I did it wrong as 15 mins later COs show up and check me and only me and already knew I had at least one in the cooler.

As long as the app works I think it is a step in the right direction.

This might already exist but a step by step "dummy proof" flowchart on how to use your e tags would be nice to prevent the " I did not know how to ...." argument.

Did your e tag say "Used" even though you had not filled them yet?
Mine say used and I have definitely not used them yet!
I can go into the harvest section but I do not want to accidentally state a catch and waste a tag.

Yes they did.
That means nothing at all.
They are coloured blue like a link which through me off but it doesn’t work that way.

A couple of my kids were drawn for walleye tags his year and I figured that I would do the E-tag option.

Now it looks like they may have a couple chances to go out with my dad to try and fill their tags, however I am sure he will not be using his phone. Does anyone know if I can switch back to using paper tags that they can bring along if they go fishing with Poppa or am I stuck with electronic tags this year?

Thanks

DR

Once you select the E tag option you are given a tag number just like a paper tag so I would say you are stuck with them. If there are still some undersubscribed options at the lake then Poppa could apply for tags.

Just filled 4 tags with it. Worked alright as we had just enough cell service to use it. Would be interesting to see what the CO would say if you didn't have coverage at the lake.

I did follow up with a call to AlbertaRelm and confirmed that once the E-tag option is selected you cannot change to paper tags.. so I guess my dad better bring his phone with him, haha.

E tags for fish…. That’s a new one. I wonder how many phones are at the bottom of a lake or river?

You can still complete the harvest report and it logs the time that it is completed without service. All explained on the etag info site. You don’t need service to complete the harvest report. I can confirm this as had no service but was able to.

This is the wording from my my wild alberta:

“With or without cellular service, the harvest record of electronically tagged fish using the AlbertaRELM App, will indicate the date and time of tagging.”

https://mywildalberta.ca/buy-licence...-licences.aspx

Can scroll down to the etag part of that link.
