A crisis of trust with the science from the federal Fisheries Department

In March 2023, the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans (FOPO) released a scathing report on science at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The report should sound alarm bells for all Canadians, especially those old enough to remember DFO’s mismanagement of Atlantic cod into a devastating collapse.

As one former Assistant Deputy Minister testified at FOPO, those responsible for the mismanagement and misfeasance must be held accountable. Until that reform and accountability happens, the crisis of trust in DFO’s science will continue and our public fisheries will be put at continued risk by an incompetent regulator who is asleep at the wheel.

Atlantic salmon farming on the Pacific coast should have been a no go from the start. As for the science its out there yet ignored. The fish themselves are of poor quality and don't taste great.

Only one reason, they are apparently the easiest and most cost effective to raise. For a few cents or dollar a pound saved by corporate fish farms DFO completely ignores the risk to west coast salmon...idiots.

If you need something mismanaged, and nowhere near budget or time acceptable timelines, get the government involved.

Why we trust them with anything and everything is beyond me.

Now, now folks, the fisheries experts at DFO have contributed to the Canadian fabric in ways no others could. Their ineptness in handling the cod fishery gave us terms like Johnny Money, several years of bags full of my tax money sent to the east coast fishermen to offset the cod collapse, named after John Crosbie, an east coast legend.

Most Canadians didn't know what a turbot was until they managed that species to collapse

Most west coasters never saw a fish farm until they were everywhere on Van Isle, dumping tons of excess pellets into the ocean with parasites thriving. Local species had to compete with the voracious invasive species with every pen breach.

Science is truly irrelevant to these folks, sporties don't exist. These guys couldn't regulate their way out of wet paper bag

If Covid proved anything at all, its that all science is suspect in that with enough money involved "science" will be quite happy to provide their employer with whatever results they want.

My brothers wife has worked various research facilitys throughout the province. Most of the "science" we are all heavily criticized for not trusting basically involves a well connected huckster finding way's to collect government grants, then either telling his employers what they want to hear or claiming the results were inconclusive. She worked for one company that was repetedly given contracts to do tests that were never once successfull or conclusive, they are still likely doing that "research" today. As far as the government is concerned, a paper trail proving that the money was spent is more important than the actual results... heck, they might even prefer "Inconclusive" results to actual data for all I know.

How dare you mock "science" (sarcasm). Most people liken "science" to an absolute. People flaunt the word "science" and mock those who question it without knowing themselves what the "science" looks at, how it's looking or what it looks like. All "science" is reviewable...especially government funded "science".
