257 weatherby

I am thinking of buying a new barrel for my Blaser rifle and I am thinking a 257 weatherby for coyotes at 400+ yards. Anybody shoot one with light bullets here? Is there another calibre that would be better for this?

i have a ultralite accumark and lady varmitr has a deluxe. I feel it is the finest caliber for alberta. foxes up to the occasional moose. fast flat and hard hitting
positives:
-undisputed king of .25's
-compared to the 270 (150gr) it kicks less and carries more energy further.
-mine does 100gr tripX at 3550, only mild pressure
-2 3/4 hi at 100 zeroed at 300 yards.
-aim dead on coyote from 25 to 350, 6"ish over back at 500
(Thats with 100gr!!!)
-tho manuals indicate that 75gr crowd the 3800-4000fps, i have never had the need
it absolutely drops everything it connects with

negatives:
-brass is 35.00 for 20
-factory loads is 75+
-full house loads only last three- four refills max.
-26" pipe
-15 -20 rounds between cleaning, any fouling starts to change POI.


You might want to check out the 257stw, googleing it there is very little on it out there.
apparently it routinely pushes 100gr at over 4400. but now you looking at 400-600 rounds between pipes. I heard that corelane sports(?) in dawson creek is doing them. I heard that it has dead on ballistics to 500 yards. if you do find something on this unit... let me know. i cant verify none of it so dont hold it agin me..

Hey I worked up a load a few years ago that still works well today. The Noztler 100gr Partition 80.5 of H-870 powder 215 Fed Primers and with very good groups out to 300 yards. Ever shoot out at the gun club we have 500 yard silhouette targets after I get the gun grouping I head for the silhouette range and use all my guns on it.

Kidding, you would be hard pressed to find a better "Coyote" Chambering, in any of the bbls. that Blaser makes.

varmitr, what kind of bbl. life do you get out of your rifle?

im probably around the 600 round mark and things "look' OK. the borescope may tell other tales. if the 257wby is like a 1/4 dragster compared to a car that gets 300,000kms. ive already braced myself for the $$$ replacement pipe.
for a hunting rifle thou, once you get a recipe figgered out. and use it for hunting only and recreational shoot 20-50 X a year, it should last a life time, firing 15 rounds in 15 mins will certainly help wear it out early.

Well the barrel life on the 257WBY is less than optimal, I have one buddy with a 257WBY and a borescope, he really babies his barrels, but after 150 rounds with plenty of cooling time between shots, he has a barrel that has the throat very fire cracked, and showing signs of throat errosin already. Accuracy and velocities are not suffering yet.
As for coyote pills well there really is'nt one in .25cal that is'nt gonna make a mess out of a pelt, except maybe Barnes solids, but they have other issues like richochets, and tumbeling on contact.
My 25'06 with 75gr. V-max's are about the best I've found on coyotes, but still something like 50% of them exit, leaving holes you could park your truck in.
You've entered the world of long range varmenting, and have found out what many of us have there is no save all caliber.

oh yes, lordy yes! just put the crosshair on fur at almost any yardage and kapow. if Wil-E-coyotee is doing a slow trot or standing it will have a real problem in a 1/4 second.
my biggest problem is menatlly over compensating for wind and distance,... rather than just shooting
in fact, the closer you get (<100 yards) the smaller the holes
i shot a wolf at 40 yards with it three times. just tooo much velocity, the barnes's act much the same a solid would. but thats not the guns/bullet fault
after hearing bushrats adventure (dick284's bud) Im kinda scared to do a borescope.
as for RKS he would do it already with DHenry at the helm.

My Dad has a lazer mark, if you want to save any fur don't do it. His 340 does less damage.
