I also took delivery of a new knife from Rick Menefee this week. His Dumpling model. I originally had spalted maple scales, but they started developing cracks. Likely still some moisture in there before it was stabilized.

Enough wood for me. We decided to go a completely different direction. Jigged black Micarta. On this knife, the blade is a2, so to get out ahead of it developing a patina on its own, I had Rick acid etch the whole blade.

I am very very happy with this knife, as Menefee is a badass knifemaker, his grinds, tapers, and swedges just show a crazy amount of skill.

My next knife will be from Mr Chisan, as it's time to support Canadian, and Pathfinder's turned out just excellent too.

Here is one I got a few months ago as an early b day gift. It’s made by Tops, it’s a smaller version of their bushcraft knife called the BOB. It’s not necessarily designed with hunting in mind but it would work. I really like the handle and overall feel of the knife, well made sheath also. I’ve been using it for an edc. Made of 1095 carbon steel.

That looks like a pretty wicked boning knife! A2 is going to work just fine, excellent knife steel that holds its edge fantastic. It's the mainstay from BARK RIVER AND lt. Wright for a reason. Really happy with my knife from Clint, and would recommend to others.

I am curious by nature and enjoy experiencing new things myself. Thus I don’t keep guns for any length of time because I wanna try something new all the time. I chose a2 because it is one of the things the maker is known for. He is a good old boy from Oklahoma, and his knives are very much based off historical patterns, with this one being a take on an earlier Tony Bose design. If I am getting a knife from a good old boy, based on a design from the past, using a modern super steel is the least of my concern because in my thinking it would be out of whack. Now, if I didn’t look after my gear, a2 would not have been an option. I’d have gone 154cm, as I did for my son’s knife from Menefee, as that is the only stainless he uses. It was a real debate, don’t get me wrong. However, the knife staying sharp for four big game critters is not important to me because I enjoy sharpening now, and don’t see it as being that onerous. Plus, I never have to skin 4 at a time. Another reason was that the maker, like Dozier and his stepson Dan Crottswith D2, feels he has a heat treat unique to him that coaxes more out of a2 than the average bear can. It also takes a wicked sharp edge in a jiffy. Finally, it is a very tough steel, and so I won’t be nearly as fraud of chipping it if I am riding bone or separating joints.

As many of us have learned in this knife journey, edge retention is only one variable to consider. An important one surely, but still only one variable.

Hope I was coherent in my explanation.

My next custom will likely be a modern stainless.

I picked up a skinning knife in New Zealand 50 years ago. It was a model used by sheep ranchers to skin any dead sheep they came across while checking their herds. They could at least sell the hides. The sheep had lots of twigs and crap stuck in their fleece and this knife held its edge for the task. It came with a heavy duty leather sheath and also a steel. I have used it on almost everything I have shot since then. Never needed anything else, although I now pack an Outdoor Edge Swingblade and have bought Swingblades for both my kids.
