Just looking at the pic's I say what you have there is a Griz and a Black bear anyway you slice or dice it, unusual that the Griz tolerates the black which is usually not the case but sometimes animals do strange things, could both be young and stupid yet, kids.

If the pic didn't have the black bear in it, most would say Griz

Because there is no grizzly north of red deer and no one ever moves around to different locations either

At least on my little phone screen those pics are fuzzy and suck

First pick is giving serious small black bear vibes

Smoky buck, it’s a black bear no matter how much you travel.

I have not said either or just that the pictures on my phone are not clear enough to give %100 id. I too lean towards it being a black bear but with those poor pics I would not rule out young grizzly

To assume people north of red deer don’t have experience with grizzly is a poor assumption though. Especially since there is plenty of grizzly north of red deer for starters

Yes, definitely a sow and cub. He was laying by her while she was grazing for a while.

I guess I should invest in a better camera for these discussions!

I will plan on walking past them today and venture further in and see what’s over the next ridge.

Yup, probably a Grizz and Black bear yearling.

Yeah I didn’t see that post and that would make it very likely it’s a black bear

Compare it to the little Blondie in the Nice Bear thread, there is no doubt.

Grizz

Looks like a 60 lb. cub from last year and a maybe a 150 lb sow. Can imagine how much that things going to shrink from when you pull the trigger till your standing over it.

Shoot that colour phase black, wet tan it, hang it on a hook, settle in and go for a dinger black.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry!!!!!!

Man the peanut gallery is harsh here. Thats a decent sized 5.5 foot like 90% of the bears that go to the taxidermist. friend told me.

Default Answers but no pics

Hey all,
This post is probably long forgotten but I figured I would follow up!
At the end of the week after one other real long hike and no bears, I did get back to the same green field and saw them together again. I put the stock on from way across the canyon to where I figured they would graze too. I came up by some rocks slowly and there they were no more than 30 yards out. I was pretty proud of my stalk but not real impressed with the bears. I watched them graze side by size for a moment and got a great look at them - closest I've actually stocked a bear before.

BUSHRAT takes the win on this one. I'd say he nailed their weights perfectly from that far away fuzzy photo. A 150 pound color phase black bear and a 60 pound black bear cub. I don't know how that could be his mother as it was way smaller than I anticipated from that far distance originally but I sure don't know if it was a small sow and cub or a two year old and yearling just hanging out.

Anyway I figured I better pull my phone out of my pocket and snap the photo for evidence for you all when the cub barked and shot out of there like a rocket. The color phase faced me for about 1.5 seconds and split out of there too. So... you'll have to take my word for it!

Thanks for the fun, ya'll. Have a great summer.

It's a rush when we can get close to any wild game, glad you were able to see them up close & personal.

Thanks for the update, HuntnVet!

Great job on the stalk. Good practice for next time - and hopefully a nice mature boar!

Grizzley can have pretty dark cubs as well. If the sow is a grizz, the cub is too.

30 yards from a mother and a cub is not the wise think to do .
I once had a mother bear stand up 15 yards beside me in a pipe line in the tall grass . Next think I knew she went in the bush and made here 4 cubs climb up a tree then came out to fight . Not only was her hair standing up .so was mine !
I slowly walked out back wards .
