Only thing this thread proves is there are way WAY too many people on AO that don’t have a clue about what they are talking about. Now I could go into a big long drawn out post about I’ve been both a cop and a game warden and that we get no training about dispatching critters, how we can only use firearms your qualified on and in 99% of agencies they have to be department owned and approved (so no going getting your 22 mag cow killer...) Or how sometimes yes a gun is the most humane but not possible due to people watching or the concern over the report of a gunshot causing alarm and panic of the area residents. Or how police are afforded the ability to do things that regular citizens would be charged for like speeding, ignoring traffic control devices, shooting wounded animals, detaining people and arresting them, up to the only people say the military who have been afforded the right to legitimately use lethal force if necessary. Or that I've both shot game, slit its throat, had coworkers use a shovel or flashlight or asp to bludgeon the creature to death. Or how the best laid plans can always go wrong and generally WILL go wrong if there is public watching. Or that in NO OTHER LINE OF WORK, are the employees under such scrutiny by society where the masses and media instantly pass judgement before knowing all the facts (similar to many here on our very own on AO). Putting the employees under such stress that often they second guess themselves out of fear of being lambasted for doing their job.
But alas why would I bother saying those few things when there are several most vocal opponents to this officers actions that know better than me, are second only to God and know that they could and WOULD do a perfect job and never foul up because of their righteousness!!
Yes sad it happened, I bet the officer learned something and most likely received in-house training to fix the inadequacies for dealing with wildlife. Should the poor guy or gal lose their job and be fired? Over dispatching an animal gone wrong? Absolutely not! For those of you calling for their head on a pike, I’m sure you’ve lived the perfect life and never done anything that could be deemed questionable! Everyone makes mistakes we are all himan, how we respond to those mistakes, what we learn from them and how we change/grow determines the kind of person we are!!!
