Default Malaysian Airlines Loses Contact With Plane

This is not good....

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysia Airlines said Saturday it lost contact with a plane carrying 239 people on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and search and rescue teams were trying to locate the aircraft.
Flight MH370 lost contact with the Subang air traffic control near Kuala Lumpur at 2:40 a.m. Saturday (18:40 GMT Friday).
The flight was operated on the Boeing 777-200 aircraft. It departed Kuala Lumpur at 12:41 a.m. Saturday (16:41 GMT Friday) and was expected to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. Saturday (22:30 GMT Friday).
The plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members, the airline said.
The airline said it was working with authorities who activated their search and rescue team to locate the aircraft. The route would take the aircraft from Malaysia across to Vietnam and China.
"Our team is currently calling the next-of-kin of passengers and crew. Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilize its full support," Malaysia Airlines CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in a statement.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members," he added.
Malaysia Airlines has 15 Boeing 777-200 jets in its fleet of about 100 planes. The state-owned carrier last month reported its fourth straight quarterly loss.
The 777 has not had a fatal crash in its 20 year history until the Asiana crash in San Francisco in July 2014.

Umm...that hasn't happened yet!

Have been following this -- I was very happy when my friend, who lives in Malaysia and travels quite a bit, logged on this evening. Doesn't look good -- the longer it takes to find it, the less likely that it will end well.

CNN reported quite a while ago that Malaysia Air said they have no idea, and that it would have been out of fuel at that time....

Is the flight path over land, along the coastline, or does it cut across the South China Sea?

Wasn't my typo but I see that they corrected it already.

Not to be fear mongering, but I sincerely hope this wasn't the work of North Korea....

No link or not bored, been watching since it happened. Don't you think it's weird it just dissapaeared? Don't you think it's weird no communication from pilots? Something sudden had to have happened. I'm not being a dick but a couple analysts haven't ruled out a terrorist act either.

With a sudden disappearance like that, a bomb on board or being shot down are the first things that come to mind. Would have assumed that under any other circumstances it would still be followed by radar....

There are lots of hotly disputed islands in the South China Sea.
I'd guess the 777 aircraft was mistaken for a military flight and brought down in the water.

I wonder how SAR is run in that part of the world.

Are there any ICAO standards?

Just wondering.

Quite a few world class airports in the region bangkok, Singapore , manila , hongkong, tokyo. Im sure they'd have updated gear.
Thoughts for those lost at sea.

Really odd because the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing is mostly over land not the ocean.

Very, very sad news. Thoughts and prayers to all affected by this terrible event. I really hope it is just and accident. There's enough turmoil in the world these days without adding more.

Reports of two oil slicks, no wreckage.
When Sully and crew put it down on the Hudson, they were quickly surrounded by ferry ships.
This is how it turns out with a water landing everywhere else....perhaps.

Knock on wood....
