Question Poll: What depth do you place your bait at when fishing for pike?

Some say right on the bottom, some say within 12 inches...others say 3-4 feet up...and still others say right under the ice.

What say you?

yah if 30 pounders were easy it wouldnt be nearly as much fun, but Im on a quest for the new record, and one day I will have it. pike are pike, they will eat what they want, when they want it, and where they want it. and thats what makes them so much fun!!!! theres no wrong answer to this poll

Now that answer has me curious! Why the slack? I am guessing the logic is that once they pick it up, they are already munching on it by the time the slack is taken up....plus, they feel no resistance so there is less tendency to spit the hook.

Sound about right? I might have to give this method a try....

yup,, i use a bit of foam sometimes that just lifts it off the bottom and gives the bait a wounded look and use those double pronged hooks colser the tail with the hooks facing tailward so after several inhales my hook set is at the front of the mouth. if i'm still fishing, i try to get a crank caster to fish above or by my set-up

Glad to see all the responses, guys! I have been doing it 'my way' for so long...but I figured it's time to try some new techniques.

It's pretty tough to go wrong with pike IMHO, but every little bit of knowledge helps. You could tie your mother in law to the line and they will still bite. Yes...even then!

A foot off the bottom. I'd probably go 2-3 feet off the bottom, but I want to have a shot at burbot too.

Sounds like a recipe for gut-hooking

I let them run with it until they stop, then give them a few seconds, feel your line, if their weight is on it they probably have the hooks, then its time to set it. Unless Im watching them, if I see it in their mouth I set the hook, and with big bait usually miss, buck fever! with smaller baits they eat it quick so hit them fast. thats why I like a treble front and rear, once they stop even if they have it by the middle they will turn it and get the hook.
