Default Lost a coyote - help

Went to check my snares today and had one where the whole coyote was eaten! Chewed it out of the snare and drug it under a spruce tree and finished it off!
What could it be? I don't think it could have been another coyote? It snowed so I couldn't see any tracks - however there was a bunch of narrow paths going around the area. A fisher maybe? But I don't think a fisher could finish off a coyote that fast!

What do you guys think?

Default Coyote eaten

Wow. Where do you live.?Wouldn't be other yotes as I dont think they eat there own kind. I would have to say wolf, cougar or bear. How many hours had it been since it was last checked?

I went to set some snares for coyotes at a bait near home and there was fresh cougar tracks. Went the next morning with my hounds they had it treed in 10 minutes. I found 4 coyote carcasses under the spruces were we got him. May very well be a cat.

I had a Coyote eaten by other Coyotes, once.

Anything's possible.

Default coyote eaten

Yes, coyotes eat coyotes. And wolves destroy coyotes. Could be an old loner wolf hanging around. Could be a cougar, although I have very little experience with them.

Depending on where you are located, I would say wolf or cougar.

Ok, well i stand corrected as i have never seen a coyote carcass draw any attention as far other yotes eating them. Awesome, now i know what do do with my skinned out yote carcasses. Thanks for the information.

Sounds like a wolf or cougar, sounds odd to me that yotes eat each other.

Yup, I've had them in snares be eaten by coyotes and I've been told by two hunters I know that have watched coyotes wounded get done in by other coyotes.

The place I'm snaring has its share of mange coyotes. This is the first time in 15 years of trapping that I've come across this.

There was one year that I threw my coyote carcasses out on a bait pile and that was the last time they visited that pile! Now I toss them in the bush.

Lost another one today about 50 yards from the first one!! Had a light snow but I did find some small coyote tracks under a spruce. Looked like the ravens had their way with it too!

Maybe try putting up a double set with your snares , I mean 10 or 15 yds apart to catch a thief if he is another dog . Sounds like you've got a CSI case on your hands .Good luck .

Sounds like a cougar to me ,to drag it under a tree is cougar behaviour if it were wolves there would be signs of a battle and bits, pieces and urine everywhere
