Default Electric Bear Fence

Here's kinda the evolution of my wall tent hunting experience over the years.

I bought this tent from Northwest Tent and Awning (today it is known as Camper's Village), back in 1989 I believe. It was right before Camper's Village bought NW Tent anyway.

Moose hunt, Oct 1999.

Spring bear hunt 2005.

Solo spring bear hunt... 2006.

Oct 2009 moose hunt. First year we used a fly on the roof.

We pitched the tent with poles for years on years, but eventually I bought one of those kits, sockets that you just insert tubing into.

I absolutely love the inside metal frame.

Then as the old girl was starting to gain a few burn marks and patches, I started using a quality tarp as an extra covering.

Notice the electric fence.

My buddy Sheldon with a big bull that he called out. Oct 2012.

I've camped solo, so many times over the years, in grizzly country, but with the numbers of grizzlies and black bears roaming the Swan Hills, I finally decided to get the electric fence.

This is what I use, it's a fencer that I got at Co-op (but any farm service/supply outfit should have them).
Cost somewhere around $100, give or take $20...

All the fence wire, stakes and insulators will also be sold by anybody that sells these fencers.

When I'm done with a hunt, I just pull the stakes and roll all the fence wire right back on the stakes, and the insulators, which you need for a gate also remain on the wire.

I can tell you that the soft 'tick, tick, tick...' sound of that fencer, as you lay down on your cot at night, it's a wonderful sound.

I highly recommend the electric fence.

I highly recommend the electric fence.[/QUOTE]

Those plastic posts are a little wimpy, fibreglass costs a little more, but is way better.

Used wall tents a lot when I was younger. Not much any more. Bear fence would have to be a must for me now. Thanks for posting.

We will be using an electric fence this year around our tent. Had a couple Grizzly bears come close during the day.
So a fence might help us sleep better at night.

I also use a double D battery unit electric fence, around our quads when leaving it unattended for a week or 10 days, as bears like seats

Haha, they really do!!

I love hearing the soft 'tick, tick, tick...' of the fencer.

And man is there ever a LOT of grizzlies roaming Whitecourt, Swan Hills area these days.
They are wandering south of Whitecourt now, ranging to edge of the farmland, east out into Blue Ridge.

My neighbour works at the small power plant, which is just across the Athabasca R from Whitecourt, like 1 km?
They have had grizzlies in their yard several times now, where they handle the wood chips feeding their Genset.

If you set foot 1 km from Whitecourt, in any direction, you are in grizzly country.

A couple of years ago one was shot on the McLeod R south of Whitecourt.

Then there was this, which was south of Whitecourt also.

Grizzlies invade acreage, Whitecourt.

Habituated Blacks can be problematic as well, they'll tear your camp up just as thoroughly.

You can get kits from Margo Supplies (not cheap!): https://margosupplies.com/ca-en/prod...nce-kits-bear/

Kodiak sometimes carries these as well, but it looks like they don't have any currently:

Grizz

That's the fact. Predatory black bears are serious threat. Never take any bear for granted.

If you are camped in the bush, and any bear comes into your camp, you have 2 options.

1. Kill the bear
2. Break camp and leave.

An electric fence that jolts the bear hard, just might be the deterent to make that bear not return. But no guarantees.

Told story in past. Bears raided our tent west of Whitecourt, ate all food out of grube boxes, ate can on Raid and can of bear spray. Went over line when they drank our bottle of whiskey.

In our camp, that would be a death sentence for the bear!

Somebody was posting a pic that could well have been a G-Bear in Wainwright a few days back, poor pic, but, says he verified it was one.

I don't doubt it a bit, saw it, they've been found right in Cochrane and suburban Calgary.

For the record, I've got 3 different grizzlies posing for my trail cameras, and that's not very far out of Whitecourt (but I can't tell you where of course).

And that's only the ones that have walked by my cameras.

One big bugger boar.

I use this one around our camp, our bear bait stash, and our portable meat cooler. Have never had an issue.
This spring we set a trail cam around our Bear Camp and got a couple of pics of different blacks beside the fence, but nothing ever went in. I can only assume the fencer did its job because we never got another pic of the same bear.
