What time are geese feeding?

Hi fellas,

I am a weekend warrior out scouting a goose hunt for this afternoon/evening. What time are you guys seeing birds arrive in the field for supper?

I’d start searching around 5 ish
Look for birds flying to and from water
They will lead you to their fields

So if you were going to be set up for the evening shoot you would suggest being in the field by 5?

Ya if you are going to be hunting in the evening 5 o clock should be good

Do you know where the birds are feeding exactly In the field?

We are onto them yes, just waiting for them to clear so we can get set up for the evening.

Good rule of thumb is geese tend to fly near 'Sun up' in the morning and 'Sun Down' in the evening. However they will fool you sometime, nothing like getting to field to set up your decoys and they have already having munchies.

Geese will leave the fields to go back to water at sun down
But they will be there for hours feeding before hand

Geese normally will fly anywhere from first light to an hour or two after that, they will fly again in the last couple of hours of light in the day.
Unless, there’s a shift in the weather, a disturbance at the roost, or a miriade of other things which could make them stay on the field all day, or on the water for a given feeding time.

It’s hunting, not clock punching.

On any given day anything could happen, but there are high opportunity scenarios which for the most part work out most of the time.

If the weather is stable and mostly clear, yes.

However on cloudy, changing weather days, geese can fly much earlier on some afternoons. Over the years, there have several times where I have come out to the field at 2:00pm and the geese were already there.

On wet miserable days they may feed off and on all day and you may not get the chance to set up without bumping birds

The birds have probably not been hunted yet
We normally scouted the evenings and hunter the next morning
Had a lot of good shoots in the evening after work and such too
It’s just going to be hot as balls waiting for them today lol

More than once when i was still guiding I would pull into the field in the dark early morn and there they were still sitting from the night before. That being said it was usually on a full or almost full moon. Hell of a way for a morning hunt to be ruined.

I blamed my spotters. They were supposed to stay until the birds left the field and put out some markers for the exact spot. As to when to set up for an evening hunt be a few hours ahead of when you think they will start flying.

Guys, I talked to the OP, and he was asking fellas who have been hunting the last two days what time birds are arriving in the fields in the evening. Not generalizations

He was asking so he could coordinate with his buddies what time to meet for setting up for the evening shoot.

He’s a dumbazz to begin with, so no worries!

The last few days the birds have started flying between 6:00 and 6:45 p.m.

For morning hunts I like to be set up for legal light. That's usually when the specks start coming in.
And if there are none, it's nice to have a coffee and watch the sunrise while waiting for the honkers.

Today the birds flew from 5:30 to 7:00 for us.
