Octopus Hook Comparison - Looking for Input
I stopped in to Cabelas in edmonton today and they never had any of the Gamakatsu octopus hooks I usually use for sturgeon. They did have some Matzuo octopus hooks though, so I picked up a few packages.
Has anyone ever used these hooks before? Any feedback?
I thought I might do a few tests to see how strong they are.....this is the results of putting 25 ft-lbs of torque on the hook at the barb area and twisting to "open" the hook. I was surprised that the gamakatsu shattered, but the Matzuo just bent.....interesting.

Higher carbon content makes for a stronger more brittle hook. The hook that bends is "softer"try owner as good high end hook.

Another test
Tried one more test......
Using a digital scale applying weight until failure. I did five of each type.
1) Gamakatsu - averaged 52 lbs pulling on bend of hook before failure.
2) Matzuo - averaged 28 lbs of pulling on bend of hook before straightening.
I'm thinking I wasted my money on these Matzuo's......I don't think I'll be using them for sturgeon....

the matzuo ones are absolute trash, dont use if your targetting anything over 2 pounds as they WILL straighten out no matter how you fish. DO not waste money on these lol

tried the Matzuo in a smaller size, tried to pinch the barb, the hooks always broke instead. I did get my 6 footer on a matzuo, because thats what was in the boat but now use gammas because I got my hands on some

Tried Matzuos because I liked their jigs but went back to Gamakatsus , the Matzuo hooks will not hold a point very long and need to be replaced.Red is a temporary color ! Gamakatsus stay sharp. Have some #6 Trokar for walleye , very sharp but larger diameter and way bigger eye. Larger sizes might be more proportional.

Last time I was in the city, cabelas, wss, and the hole were all sold out of the gamakatsu hooks I wanted for my walleye rigs. I decided to try the mustad ones...I didn't do the testing you guys did with weights and what not. But on walleye they held up really good, overall I was happy with them and they stayed sticky sharp...

Mustads are ok for smaller fish, but they tend to straighten fairly easy on very big fish like large sturgeon, right dodger.?

I used 7/0 Mustad jig hooks for sturgen for years and never had a problem. I cought 9 ft sturgen on those hooks. I could be your hooks are too small.
