How to ?? Rainbows on ice

Hello all,
Been gone from this forum due to health problems and terrible internet service from telus. Now I'm back to 75% good.
Hope your winter is good so far!!


Planning to go to Kakut Lake Provincial pond. Never fished For Rainbows under ice. Could use any good advice.

Also planning to go after Whitefish at Sturgeon and Snipe Lakes over the next 4 weeks.
Any advice would be great.

Its been a long time since I dipped for bows in the winter, or other trout for that matter, but for others I have always used maggots. In the summer its usually worms or maggots for trout.

Nice you are getting better,.. where abouts are you leaving from for your trips?

Get your hands on some jig heads - grab black, white, even chartreuse. 1/32oz. or larger is a good starting point. If you are allowed bait, tip with a small piece of shrimp (costco shrimp rings work great), dew worm, or maggots. If not, use unscented plastic imitations. Drop the jig to the bottom - usually about 10-20 ft is good - and jig the setup in a very small pattern about 6" off bottom.

They can be finicky so bring a variety of baits: worms, maggots, cheese, corn, powerbait, shrimp and whatever else you want to try. Offer the trout a different bait on each hook you have down untill they show a preference for one, then switch all your hooks to that bait.

They can even switch preferences throughout the day, so if it slows down, go back to the "buffet" presentation till the fish show a preference again.

Drill lots of holes and try to find dropoffs and weedlines. I like to use 6 lb test the lighter the line the better. Trout worms and rainbow glitter powerbait caught most of my bows last year. I like to use maggots on a snailed hook as well but I had caught way to many suckers with it.

Got these panfies last year. yellow or pink jig heads and half a worm about a foot and a half of bottom seems to be the ticket for me. Leave plenty of tail of the worm hanging off and let them inhale it. Good luck

I like to use a 1/20 oz rubber tailed jig with about 3 maggots on it. Powerbait or shrimp is good too. I usually find about a foot to 2 feet off the bottom is better. I think the trout can spot that easier from a distance. Depth of water can vary on the day or time of year. Try 6 feet to 20 feet. Move the hook around to attract them then keep it still for them to bite.

Lake whites, I fish right on bottom with a wire worm and maggot combo just twitching the rod tip. small spoons or thumpers of bottom work wonders as well.

Mitzi Ditzi with maggots or small worms for trout. My whitefish are bought from commercial guys. But you have to be on the lake because last year the hudderites bought everyfish caught right off the ice here.

I have been told if you can see them you can catch them. They are so gentle takeing bait you cant feel it you have to watch.
