Smile New to Alberta

I moved here to Calgary last year from BC. I'm use to fishing Salmon and I'm interested in fishing the bow river for trout. Anyone know where I can go? I heard there are certain areas that are restricted. What about Fish Creek Provincial Park area? Also for trout fishing I'm guessing spinners? I still have to read up on the Alberta fishing regulations as for what I can and cannot keep. I'm new to this.

Bow river is a very intimidating river for those that dont know it and it can get discouraging after a while, just to warn you, but it pays off in the end.

Well first off if you can fly fish. This is the place you definitely want to do it, by far the best way to fish this river, you will have the most success this way. But by the seems of it you are a spin fisher. So here is what you want to use there. 6-8lb mono, if you try spoons i find #6 is the best size and ive found a red and white and black five of diamonds works the best. For spinners i find #4 is the best size, i prefer Panther Martins especially the one with the silver blade/yellow body with red dots. But the all time money lures on the river are Rapala's. Preferably rainbow/brown trout imitations, they work great in the river .

Fish Creek is a good place to fish, lots of good holes and holds some really nice fish as well. Other good places is Carburn Park, north and south of the 22X(marqui of lorne trail)

Go to this link and scroll down to Bow river and there will be all the regs you need to know. Just so you know if you are fishing Fish Creek it is open year round. http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/

Nice advice lethal. Your advice of setting depth around 7 feet for my san juan worm bagged me 3 decent rockies today. You are certainly an asset to this site my friend.

hahaha I refuse to shop at cambodian tire , Id rather go to the fishing hole or fishing centre , or wholesale sports , sure you pay a little bit more but they always have what your looking for , and if you need something you dont have to hunt down the only person who works in the store.

Here is the trick to get fast service, find the first display then.......knock it over, someone will be there in a jiffy(better if the display makes a big noise/mess )

I've tried Fly fishing before. I like it but do require more practice.

hahhaa lmao. I was at Canadian Tire and yup, your right, it took FOREVER to get any customer service around. I'll keep that in mind for next time. Although when I DID get the service it was from the owner and he GAVE me some free fishing lures. He probably wanted my number in exchange.

Thanks Sage. I'll have to get a new fly rod first. Guess I should do some reading on fly rods and accessories before buying anything. I don't want to buy a cheap rod but also nothing too expensive either. Any ideas on brand name?

Welcome to AO! as for rod that are decent but not to much $$$ look into a Sage Launch or Sage FLi. $199-$299 if im not mistaken, and a Pflueger Trion Reel, nice pretty little reel for $149 last time i checked and the spools are interchangeable with the orvis battenkill i think, one of the orvis's anyways. You should have moved to Edmonton, so you can suffer like the rest of us when we want to fish the Bow and have to make the drive.

TFO also makes a womans flyrod called "Casting for recovery".

Clicky for rod

Yep and they are cheap combo's but are wicked rods. Plus they have i believe a 5 year warranty??? not sure if im completely right with the year and the TFO manufacturer is in calgary so you just take the rod there and they fix it for you(as long as it is a warranty issue)

They are lifetime. They will replace your broken piece for $25.00 no questions asked.

Thanks for correction, wasnt 100% sure, cant beat a $200 rod/reel(reel complete with fly line and leader) combo that works great and has a lifetime warranty on the rod.

I got the Missus the TFO Signature series last year, 9' 5wt,not a bad looking flyrod. The line is no hell but I'll replace it with a Cortland 444 series.

Rednecgrl, a cheap rod doesn't nessassarily mean poor quality,my Nephew purchased a Martin combo at the Fishin Hole a few years ago,$100.00 I believe. He can cast it as well as I can with my high end stuff and handle any trout the Bow has to offer.

I wouldn't spend a whole lot on a reel if you plan to put together your own outfit, they basically just hold your line. There are good reels for under $100.00.

IMO I'd spend what you can afford on a quality flyline if anything.

My wife started fly fishing last year, started out using my gear and found out she just loves F.F. Now she has her own rig and float tube and is eagerly waiting for ice out.
