Pike Flys.....might just work.....
Hi Guys,
Those of you who fly fish here is a new pattern I tied up. I am a real rookie when it comes to fly tying but I think these are big enough and bad enough to slay some pike! What do you think? I tied them to mimic a sucker or bait fish......
I am pretty sure its not ground breaking! and likely it has been done before....

I think you will miss many tail bites with small hook... Nice tie tho.

just tie a trailer hook on with some heavy carbon using a snell knot...looks fantastic by the way and I can promise you it will get some hits!

Thats a good point. Although I have tied some similar up using the same hooks.....keep in mind these are BIG streamers the hook is size 3/0. I have found of the pike I do catch fly fishing they just INHALE it......I think I might take the chance on missing a few fish compared to the ones I might injure trying to release em if I had a trailer......I only practice C&R not a big fish eater. Thanks for the info! If I catch any on them I will try to take pics of them in action.

Nice flies! I would be tempted not to use trailer hooks only because (in my experience) more often than not, they end up reducing the action of the fly as well as fouling the tail fibers of your flies which obviously also affects the action. Maybe someone here has a fool proof way to attach the trailer without tangling or adding too much weight to the back of the fly? The easiest solution is to use a longer shanked hook to put the hooking point closer to the middle of the fly I think.

Confirmed!
Well they do work....Went out tonight (forgot my camera) second cast on the fly hammered a 3 lber, was REALLY windy so I didn't stay long. As usual the pike inhaled the fly but was a quick and easy release. Hope for some calmer and sunnier weather to try it out more.

I never use a trailer for Pike, waste of money and time! And I can't recall a time when I had trouble hooking Pike.
Good job on the fly

Thanks guys....I am kind of a hack when it comes to tying flys. I have found the nice big feathers give the fly a bit of "neutral bouyancy" in calm waters when you are stripping the fly 4-6inch strips with a pause....the fly will stop dead and turn......this really gets the pike going...they usually strike on the stop right before the next strip.....when you strip you set the hook! Also with the set-up I use the flys are only 4-6 inches below the surface so if the waters calm you can see the "strike swirl" where your fly is....another good tip to set the hook.
