I was wondering about the ice myself. as far as what works, I usaully use white tube jigs and smelts for lakers

dube. how's the snow on top depth wise and the flood water situation on the lake? with that much ice yet, i may get a chance for another run in a couple of weeks. thanks for any info.

Was there on sat. and snow was ankle deep and drifted a little deeper in some spots. Ice is solid with about the first 2" rotten from a few weeks back before we got all the snow. Still plenty of winter out here.

The ice is getting thinner close to shore but I would still say 24" in most spots. However, close to the dam is opening up pretty fast.

no flood water? things are a lot different on the lakes south of there. i understand there was another good dump of snow down there again as well. thanks for the report dube. appreciated.

How was it many fish and what was working I'm headed there this weekend

A couple weeks back I was flooding holes fishing for whites right on the bank but some areas are worse than others. The snow is actually packing and sticking to ice for the first time all season which may be hiding slush in some spots.
I do fish up the lake quite a ways so couldn't say what it's like closer to the dam like driftwood for example, but there were a lot of guys fishing there when I drove by.
Up the lake it was 6-8" of loose snow, 4-5" of caked snow and 30" of crystal ice, been working the arms with the ole hand auger pretty good.

Fishing has been good by the way.

I was at the far end near Bueller creek and there was at least a foot of floodwater, and another foot of snow. Would have been awful without snowshoes but they kept me on top. Very important. Not sure if it was just that end of the lake, but lots of floodwater. tons of ice too and about 25 fish. all small.

Yeah I think if you're around any of the major feeder creeks there will be water. It's high and dry where I go, didn't even notice any slush in my footsteps on the way back.
At any rate I'd say there are a few good weeks left before things start to get dangerous.
Pike, fishing has been good. White jigs, I don't use the tubes because I don't like the way they feel on the line. So jig heads in white and pink, the bodies I use glow and a small chunk of smelt. How you bait the hook is critical because they are quite good at removing it, not sure who is feeding who pound for pound.

Does shrimp work to because I don't have to many smelts left

Couldn't say about the shrimp dude, I tend to have good luck on the rig I use so haven't switched it up.
Finding them is the key, in my opinion if you don't get any action within 20min it's time to cut another hole. Go deeper or shallower until you start getting bites, a lot of times I'll hook one before the lure even makes it to the bottom.

They are in there and I'm sure some spots produce better than others. I should tell you I have spent a ridiculous amount of time sitting out there this winter (work got a little slow). Literally hundreds of holes cut. I had one bad stretch of 3 sunny glorious days with not one single bite but it was georgous out with not even the slightest breeze so it wasn't a total loss. Other days, well lets just say when it's on it's on. Anyway, I've put in major time to get it all dialled in. There has been plenty of reports of getting skunked myself included so don't be expecting the holy grail on account of me.

All fishing aside, there is a cow moose with a yearling calf that hangs out in the area and have had quite a few opputunities to sit and watch them graze, very cool. Also there is a brave little coyote that likes to come up and beg for goodies, I'm certain you could get it to come to your hand although I'm not sure it's a wise idea. He can come up pretty quickly if you're not paying attention but also very cool to see. I've watched several avalanches rip down the numerous gullies that line the lake, cool from a distance. Dogsledders, kiters....at the end of the day it's just awesome to be out there. Beautiful lake with 360 views what more could you ask for.
