Default Chironomids for whites

anyone tried chironomids instead of wire worms for lake whites under the ice?

I've got a big ol' box of them that slay trout

I’m going to try this next week. I hope my blood worm imitations work. I think people like wireworms because they have weight behind them, where as flies are so dang light.

I was gonna go to sylvan with my nymph box and chironomid box and see if I could entice any. Never targeted lake whites before

Yes I have and Yes they work. I have had really good luck on different colored ice cream cones as well.

I use them lots in the summer, find blood worm fly works better in the winter.

I used to exclusively fly fish and tried to carry it over into the winter months for whites and rainbows. From my experience they are not as responsive to the typically high producing flies like nymph patterns, traditional chironomids and wooly buggers/leech patterns.

Wireworms do seem to be effective but I think they can be mistaken for a variety of different invertebrates which makes them enticing.

Chironomids are one of the few "bugs" that are available year round so should work well for whites. I have never tried them for whites but they work well for trout fishing a scud with a chironomid dropper.

If you want to use just a chironomid and want some extra weight just tie some with tungsten bead heads. You can wrap some with lead to but you will loose a bit of that thin profile.
