Default Surf fishing in Puerto Vallarta.

Hey everyone. Heading down to Puerto Vallarta in a couple of weeks(Punta Mita actually) and wanted to give surf fishing a shot. Sounds like 7 or 8 wt fly rod would work or a med spinning setup would work.

Anyone have any tips on lures that work good or any places to check out? Anything else a fisherman should know before he goes down?

Thanks.

Supposedly the sexy surf fishing is still on, roosterfish and such. Ya might need a bigger boat to quote a movie.

I ran a 12' ugly stick and a reel the brings in 56" of line per turn, but when I was down it was low season (March) did end up having fun with a mess of salt water catfish. but that was just a bait rig and squid.

On the beach in Mazatlan it took 3oz to hold bottom, so at you would need a steelhead/salmon at minimum you usually need a 75 yards plus cast.

You can have fun though it is worth the hassle.

Hire a boat too, it's worth the pain, I believe there is a fleet right in Punta Mita I was there 14 years ago nice place, it was out of the way back then.

havent been to mita but have been to PVR, Riviera Nyarit and Bucareas a few times. if you hit the beach in town you can find a local fisherman that will take you out in his boat for a few hours for about 40 bucks as long as you let him keep your catch; if you are really cheap (like me) you can sit thru a 2 hour time share schpeel and get a free charter. never tried surf fishing as there are pretty cheap boating options
cheers

Surf fishing is a blast, I brought a 12' ugly as well.
Was using a 4 oz weight and it held in he surf just fine. I tied up some bait rigs with small circle hooks and i asked the kitchen staff for shrimp and squid. shrimp seemed to catch more fish. Take a rod forsure. it was a blast. if your jsut sittting on the beach may as well be fishing.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Wasn't really thinking of bait fishing. Was more thinking of casting some spoons out and see what I can get, even if it's only jacks.

Anyone know of any color schemes that work well?

I was just north of bucerias this spring and brought a 9 wt and fished with white and chartreuse clouser minnows and leftys deceivers. I waded out into the surf in the morning or evening and caught some jacks and grouper. Nothing huge but it was a lot of fun. Next time I think I will bring a bait rig as well for when we are just sitting on the beach.
