Default Jumbos from the past weekend

Got into a bunch of perch on the weekend. Meet a couple other AO members. All in all a great weekend. Perch ranged from 11-14 inches. Biggest being 13.7. Enjoy

...But a huge pain in the ass to fillet. I've spent my whole life pulling those little guys up, and they're a lot of fun to catch, when you get into a school of them and lots of double-headers on pickerel rigs, but man what a pain to fillet.

I've never had them. Why are they a pain to filet? Lots of small bones?

Tons of small bones, and very little meat. It's almost not worth it. Having said that, the jumbos in these pics are bigger than any perch I've ever seen before.

Not sure why they would be hard to clean eve 6"-8" inches are easy w a sharp knife. Electric work great on perch too.

Just so many small bones in there that you have to pick through...it's always been a pain. At our cabin in MB, we regularly pull out dozens upon dozens, but I learned long ago to just toss 'em back. Not worth the trouble. Now, the eater-sized Walleye, on the other hand......

Deboning a perch is the same as a walleye, remove fillet and then cut off ribs then cut out pin bones.

On small perch it isn't worthwhile, best off to just cook them whole and then pull the bones out(not that hard when you figure out how to do it). Larger perch like these filleting them is worthwhile though.

I figured there had to be a difference. I've certainly never seen perch this big in my life! The colours are spectacular...

The nice thing about an 11 inch perch is that they are as thick as a 16 inch walleye. Easy to get the meat off and gives a decent return.

Here is one of the nice ones I caught in SK. Caught him on a 2.5 in rapala lol.

Perch on a rap...cripes. I don't think I've ever had one on a lure...pickerel rigs only. Craziness, I tell ya...

I caught 2 on the same lure on 2 different days. I couldn't believe it lol. Must have been striking out of aggression more then hunger as they could barely get the treble in their mouth let alone the actual lure.

Ive never really targeted perch in the summer. I started ice fishing for them last year but only used really small hooks. Do you use larger hooks in the open water?

8" plus Perch are easy to fillet boneless. With a little practice, 15 perch in about 3/4 hr. or less. Can sometimes get cheek meat out of the 12" ones. just like walleye.

Lake X is sure a good spot. I've seen people with everything from Perch to Walley, to pike, to Rainbows, Browns, Cutty's taken from Lake X. I even heard tell of Tuna and salmon being taken there..........

Perch aren't a pain to filet whatsoever, I do 120 over three days in the winter in ND. The smaller ones can be a bit of a pain but the ones in the 1.5 to 2lb range have an absolute ton of meat.

Nice fish, I sure wish I knew where to find those in Alberta!

perch are all the same for cleaning regardless of size. Big fat females don't necessarily mean more meat. Unless you like belly and eggs maybe.
