Default 22 Nosler

Sounds interesting... Might be my next caliber choice, strictly for coyotes.

Handloads should return more impressive numbers, velocity wise.

https://www.nosler.com/22-nosler

Quote:
22 Nosler is the newest and most diminutive member of the Nosler cartridge family. While it does not share the same parent cartridge as its predecessors, it does possess the same spirit in fulfilling an important role.

The 22 Nosler was born from the idea of creating the most powerful .22 caliber centerfire cartridge that would reliably function in the AR platform. Compared to the 223 Remington / 5.56 NATO, the 22 Nosler has 25% more case capacity making it roughly 300 fps faster at the muzzle for maximized performance.

How hard is it to retrofit an existing AR-15 chambered in 223 Rem / 5.56 NATO into a 22 Nosler? Switch to a 6.8 Remington SPC magazine along with a simple 22 Nosler barrel swap and the transformation is complete.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:

The 22 Nosler case holds 34.2gr H2O at overflow, and 31.2gr H2O with a 55gr Ballistic Tip® seated to 2.260” OAL. For comparison, a 223 Remington case holds 27.4gr H2O with a 55gr BT seated at 2.260” OAL. The 22 Nosler has almost 25% more case capacity than the 223 Remington.

Bolt face dimensions are identical for the 22 Nosler and the 223 Remington / 5.56 NATO at .378”.

Barrel Life with all barrels, it really depends on how they are treated but one should see approximately 2,000 rounds as used in competition and as many as 4,000 rounds if used as a plinking rifle.

It offers almost no advantages aside from being AR15 compatible, which is the selling point. Being something we can't use to hunt coyotes up north here I think it's a little pointless. Nosler also lists barrel life at about 2000 rounds...which isn't great

Answer is right there. They necked down the 6.8 SPC.

Would consider it if I didn't already have a 22-250.

Mentioned 6.8 mag switch but never specified it as the actual parent case.

I don't think there is one... I think they designed a new case with 6.8 SPC "body" dimension, and a .223 rim.

The SPC has a rim diameter of 0.421", the 22 Nosler has the same .223 rim size of 0.378".

Answer to a question no one ever asked!

22-250 has better ballistics, will work in the 308 AR platform if you want it to and has about the same or better barrel life.

Exactly - bought a .22-250 two years ago because they didn't have any .223's left, worked out great.

Haven’t had much luck getting a 223 rem much past 3k.
The longer neck IMO will help up the round count of the 22 Nosler.

Ya it sounds pretty useless in the ar platform for us Canadians. For the American ar15 coyote hunting market I think it's pretty cool.

For us Canadians I think it would make a decent bolt action for varminters who want more speed than a 223 but don't want a 22-250. Only real world use will tell. I still want a 30 nosler

Try the 40 grain Vmax. I can get them up over 3800 fps in my 223. They work great on yotes and rarely do they pass through. The 50 grain bullets like the SPSX I can get to 3500 and stay under book max. Hell, even a 221 FB will do better than 3250 FPS with a 50 grain bullet and almost 3500 with a 40 Vmax. The 221 FB barrel life in the 9000 or better range and the 223 will run 5000 at those speeds.

The same could be said with most wildcats and even a lot of factory rounds.

Look at all the different .30 cal cartridges... Did humanity really need all of these ? No...

Good post. They were all the " next new thing" at one time. To the developers, keep on cranking out the new ones and let the market decide.

No group is more prone to buying the shiny, next new thing than "Outdoorsmen". Packs, scopes, camo, etc., but a new cartridge is the "question no one asked".

On a final note . The good old "cartridge you will never have" post would never exist if there were never any new ones.

I'm interested. Looks like a good fit for the 62gr plugs.
