Default Mini Rant

So...a guy walks into an archery shop, gets asked if he needs help...says no...picks up a bow and immediately pulls it back.

The owner asks politely please do not draw back the bow without assistance.

The customer gets snarky questioning the age and experience of the shop owner siting his own experience...

Please folks...unless you bought the bow, do not randomly pick up and draw back bows, this drives shop owners crazy!

Too much can go wrong, accidents happen....no matter how good you think you are, just don't do it.

....rant over enjoy the weekend!

I can understand the frustration, imagine the situation that the owner would be in if some clown dry fired a new bow.

I could not agree more LC. If it is not yours you should not touch it without permission. The saying "You break it, you own it" comes to mind here.

I saw a young lad dry fire a new bow on a display rack at the Edmonton boat and sportsman show years ago. Im not sure who wanted to smack the kid more, his dad or the shop owner. If you break it you bought it.

That's why string locks are usually put on bows cause common sense isn't always there with people.

C should have asked if he could hold the guys wallet while he played with the bows. Anyone who would claim to be experienced and know what they're doing, definitely wouldn't be drawing a bow with their fingers and without an arrow.

Those guys are too nice, I can't imagine them handling a customer in a rude fashion even if they were deserving.

On a side note, they really came through for a friend of mine the other day, saved his season. I really appreciate the kind of service those guys provide.

zip tie around strings and cables fixes the issue....

I have had the same experience many times, someone unknown comes along and sees a bow in a display rack and draws it back....

I have to make the following two immediate deductions:

1) No one walks around with a badge showing archery experience thus I assume ZERO experience

2) The picked up the and drew without asking, thus the person has indicated a total basic lack of understanding of archery courtesy thus deducing minimal to no experience, or if experienced a complete disregard for archery courtesy and basic safety rules...

Thus my warning is two parted.... One is I ask the person to let it down immediately and slowly, the second I explain that if they want to draw the bow to feel the cycle they MUST ask first.

If they get snarky and say how many years of archery experience they have I say well sorry I automatically assumed you had none as you could not even observe basic archery courtesy and safety...

If they continue being snarky I refer them to my competition so they can go wreck a bow there...

The customer is not always right!.... Besides they are not a customer until they buy something!...

That's the reason why the bigger department stores (Cabelas and Wholesale) put locks on all their bows. I work with the public, and unless you know the customer on a personal level, always assume they are clinically retarded or have the knowledge of your average 2 year old parakeet.

People surprise me every day with how little they know.

"How much are flares for my Cummins"

Don't get me started on the generally retarded public...

One reason that I hate shopping at the bigger chain stores is that many of the staff treat everyone like an idiot.

Because they have too...because every day they deal with someone who defies common sense. My time in retail was short but just when I thought I had seen or heard something so ridiculous, the next person seems to top it off. Until you demonstrate your not an idiot...they have to assume you are!

Let me make a quick list -

-Dry fire a bow
-Opening plastic wrapped knives to see how sharp they are and cutting themselves open enough we have to call an ambulance.
-testing the conibear traps by setting them and putting their finger in it.
- upset customer that describes themself as an experienced hunter, buys rifle and demands refund after hunting with it because he missed a deer with it. Thought that bore sighted at factory means zeroed for all natures of ammunition according to what is on the box of ammo.
- rifle is damaged from an ammunition malfunction. Later admits he likes to mixing powder (since he has been doing it for years to "optimize" the load)
- returns axe because it is too light and he repeatedly hit himself in the head bring it up. Forehead has bandage.
- customer comes in to the store in July and asks how to preserve a deer. Turns out he thought the season started in July and shot a deer without any tags and wanted to buy tags to put on it. Did not know what a WMU was.
- customer with massive scope ring around one eye. Suggests there is a problem with the scope. Brings rifle in. Scope is mounted so far to the rear it covers more than half the buttstock in the back.

Establish a raport with the sales guy and go from there....

Not all sales person are idiots...but they may be as well.

Never underestimate the power of stupid...

"Common sense is not so common" Voltaire in the 1700's!.....

Common sense has never been common...

It is all about training and education....

Nobody is born with common sense other than pain hurts, hunger means we need food, thirst means we need water, and cry until we get it.... HECK we are all born NDP.....

I was a country boy and we had fun with our city cousins.... they ****ed on an electric fence, tried to milk a bull etc.. then when I went to city whole different story.... was told to give every pan handler a loony or I would get beat up, etc...

Bump....witnessed the same thing again today. Don't pick up a bow you don't own and draw it back with your fingers.

Tim Gillingham just dry fired a bow on Facebook live, it happens to the best archers too!

People just can't resist because "it will never happen to me." Many of the stores here in Winnipeg have locks on them.

Sounds like they need some signage Lefty. As a non-archer who might be looking into bow-hunting, I would not know that pulling back the bowstring was damaging/dangerous/whatever. It's not really common sense if you are a newbie. Maybe put the bows behind the counter like guns are.

The old, "I have been doing this for 30 years" was the justification.

The natural tendancy after drawing a bow is to aim to it- after that is to release!!
I have seen it done a few times with compounds
