Default Bear Bait question

Looking for advice - First time Bear Hunter

I have a black bear on my game camera from 2 days ago ( pic attached ). We went in today at noon and refilled the barrel - On arriving at the entrance to the bear bait at about 6pm tonight we spotted ( 2 ) grizzly 2 year old cubs on the road- they stayed for about 20 seconds and then ran off.

After deep self motivation we loaded up and began to walk into the bait site. 1/4 way in we heard a bear growl or yell ( what ever you call it ) in our direction and we stopped backed out.

( chicken or smart - either way we left )...

Will a black bear defend the site or only a grizzly.

Can't say anything for sure, but there is no doubt a grizz would defend it's food more aggressively than a black in most circumstances.

However, I have never had a bear "roar" at me on my baits (black or grizz)....they will sit and watch or tree themselves, or if they get aggressive they'll start popping their jaw, stomping and possibly even bluff (never been bluffed by a black yet, but have been by a grizz). Seems weird you would hear a roar, my guess is most likely it wasn't related to you being there at all, you just happened to hear it.

Regardless, be extra cautious with grizz in the area man!

I really don't know the answer to your question, but if it was me I would assume that either species would protect it's food source, just to be on the safe side.
I do have to say, that is the prettiest bait barrell I have ever seen.

Default Bait

Well thanks for the barrel comp. I think I will just look else where - spot and stock. The bears are out. Go back on closing day and haul my barrel and blind home.

I've heard blacks make kind of a woof sound. But I always thought it more of a playful gesture than aggressive. Growing up, we would get them in our back yard. My dad fertilized the lawn with manure from the neighbour's pasture. I remember watching one rolling around in it from the back deck. He was making that sound.

But seriously, a mamma griz and her babbies... leave 'em be. Most likely the black is long gone with her in the area anyway.

That's a really nice black bear, go get him but first I'd do the hundred yard dash and grab the camera, then you'll know for sure. I pass by there quite often if you need some backup.

Default Got the camera

The grizzly's have not been around ( on camera for 2 days ) the black bear came back ( on camera) last night. Have the grizzly's moved on or just on a 3 - 4 day rotation. Have to get the camera back out there.
