First 5 shots at 1000yds

Finally got to get back out shooting again today. I started out with my new 22, tried a couple different types of ammo @ 50yds. The center of the bottom target was just getting the scope on paper as this is the first time shooting the new rifle.













Then I took my big gun out to try some long range shooting, had a pretty stiff wind today though. First I set up at 800yds. Last time I shot at 800yds I was dialed up 17.25 moa so this time I knocked it down to 16.5 moa. I’m pretty sure if I took my time I could have tightened them up.













Once I seen that 16.5 moa was right on for 800yds I dialed it up 24.5 MOA stretched it out to 1000yds to see what would happen.





Only 3 of the 5 shots hit the paper, it was hard to judge the wind with no markers, I was still pretty happy with the results. 10 shots total, 5 from 800 and 5 from 1000 and only 2 missed the target. All calculations were just programmed into the Swarovski app, there was no other shots to see where the rifle was shooting. I imagine the two shots that missed at 1000yds we’re just off to the left of the target. I was holding 3 MOA to the left for wind.

Thanks Cat. It seems like all my trips have been rushed this winter and the snow is too deep to get into the pit where it’ll be easier to read the wind. I’m looking forward to the spring when the days are longer and I can get into the pit where I’ll be able to see the effects on the grass and leaves from the wind. The Swarovski app is really helpful with the long distance shooting, even if you don’t have a Swarovski scope.

Ya, I can’t tell if I hit the target until I drive up to it, 1000yds is a long shot, lol.

It’s been a lot of fun so far, I’m hoping to be able to post up a 1/2 MOA group or better at 1000yds, the wind makes it a heck of a lot more difficult doing this at 1000yds than at 100yds that’s for sure.

You need a big dirt pile or something so you can spot your misses. I use a 24x24” Ar500 plate painted white with just an orange dot in the Center. Set up a spotting scope so some one can spot for you.

My target camera tracks every shot , even when the bullet hits the snow bank!
I don’t know why I didn’t buy one when they first cane out what with all the long range shooting I do !

I’ve got a bullseye target cam now but have only tried it out to 400 yards. It seems to work pretty good. Looking forward for all this white crap to disappear so I can try it at 1100.

It’s an unmaintained road that dead ends at a gravel pit, the only way there is to drive past me. The entrance to the gravel pit is right where we are.


You can see the road in the center right of the pic, the pit is at the end of the road.

Don't put the camera to the left of the target unless it is armor plated or works with holes in it

Great job, definitely not a bad start. If you don’t mind I may have a better spot for you to shoot that far on crown west of Edmonton. It’s a maintained road so it’s always cleared by a grater, but it’s a dead end road too. Fully treed in so it helps with wind.

It sure does, but it also shows that with very little long range expirience that it’s possible to put 2 out of five bullets 1” apart at 1000yds which is pretty impressive, not to mention they are on bullseye. And keep in mind that was my first attempt at 1000yds.

All true, it shows that you were able to calculate the trajectory very well, but even slight variations in the wind made the difference between almost hitting the bullseye, and missing the entire target. Even if you could accurately measure the wind at your shooting location, a slight gust, or a change along the 1000 yards to the target, makes consistent shooting at 1000 yards very difficult, in all but dead calm conditions.

Today's long range hunting craze is the new 'magnumitis'. 95% of hunters have no business shooting at a deer at 1000 yards.

Misses and wounding of animals can and are made at ranges as little as 100 yards as well.
Nobody seems to get on that band wagon however .
It is a hunter’s obligation to make the very best shot possible for a quick kill, regardless of range .

Shooting a target at any range shows shots on a target , what the shooter does with that data is up to them.
