Car Paint Peeling

So we have a 2013 Mazda CX-9 that we picked up used last April. It has about 90k on it and just noticed this huge chuck of paint that has peeled off. It must’ve happened the other day at the car wash. The bumper has a few smaller paint issues too. What is the best way to fix this? Typical cost? Or any recommendations for a decent paint shop? I’m around Lloyd but can take it anywhere between here, Edmotnon or Calgary.

Yucky job now, looks like no adhesion/sanding scratches. Now the bumper has to come off and all that paint/clear stripped/sanded down to plastic again and start anew. Some times a good compressor and blow gun can remove most of it, trick we used when I was a prepper.

I would not be surprised if that costs you up to a grand for a body shop to re do that bumper. All depends on the labor to remove the paint that's peeling.

Yup, looks like someone forgot to use plastic adhesion promoter before they painted it. Often a new bumper cover will cost less than what the labour hours required to strip and prep the old one properly would cost.

Most of the time its from a previous repair not done prop3. Was the car in a previous accident?

Ya before we bought it. The majority was the front left corner of the car but they did repair the rear bumper too. Got it all inspected and it was good and then we’ve had issues with the paint on the bumper and now this big missing strip. The dealer said if we bring it back to Calgary he’ll fix it. I assume it will be another crappy fix though. Lipstick on a pig. Rather pay a little $$ and get it fixed properly.

Possibly an aftermarket bumper cover that was coated with incorrect primer/procedure from the manufacturer. Body shop that installed and painted it should have stripped it and started over. That's the problem with cheap overseas parts. Anyhoo, it will have to be removed and stripped/re-painted.

Not an infrequent problem with OEM plastic replacement bumpers also.

When I prepped cars, we sanded everything. By the time I left the trade, the inside of new parts and bumpers got a scotchbrite sanding and adhesion promoter. It was the new way. I know we never had peeling in the middle of a panel like that when we sanded them but a few came back after they switched to the adhesion promoter way.

On the bumpers, any brands plastic will peel paint if they don't use the adhesion promoter properly. All good until you get a rock chip or bump something in the cold.

Yep, it's all about proper pre painting procedure.

Took it to a shop in lloydminster and was quoted just under $1000 to remove bumper, strip paint, prep, repaint and install

I worked on a lot of Mazda's back in the day. I would almost bet that cover comes off real easy if you want to save a few labor bucks and do it yourself. Youtube to make sure it is easy if you want to try it.
