As far as fur is concerned if u can stay away from the shoulder and spine most will do ok. My 222 with 40 grain ballistic tips loaded Ave speeds is about as fur friendly as I've ever seen and I do custom skinning for several shooters.

I'm shooting a savage Bmag with a fluted heavy barrel and laminate stock topped with a nikon 4x12, the best groups are with american eagle 20 grain you can cover 5 shots with a nickle at 100yrds. It's a blast popping mapies when no yotes come in,so far my best is 138yrds, cheers.

I like my 243. Dual purpose from Sept to Nov.
Down to my last box for Hornady 70gr SXSP.
Also like the Speer TNT in 70 gr.,
I like the previous user of the Barnes for keeping the pelts in fair shape.

Only 1 person mentioned it. Bought myself a savage in .17hmr This is my coyote gun, ammo is dirt cheap. Yeah I gotta get in closer but whatever. This thing is quite accurate. Headshots only.

My personal coyote rifle is a .243, but have used a .223 as well. Both work good, my wife has a 22-250 so I think when my .243 is done with I’ll get it rebarrelled to a 22-250 so the wife and I have the same calibre.

Its hardly the best choice but my 28 nosler has been my go to for the last 2 years. Its great practice shooting for my big game rig and I can also shoot this rifle farther than anything else I own. The 160gr accubonds whiz right through with barely any pelt damage.

Haven’t shot many coyotes but have used a .22 LR, .243 win with superformance 58 grain vmax, .270 win hand loaded 140 grain SST, .303 British shooting Winchester 180 grain power points and 12 gauge with 00 buck shot. The ones with the least pelt damage were the ones shot with the .22, the 12 gauge and the .270.
The .270 and the .303 were neck shots. The .243 were 200 yard low in the chest shots. The .22 and 12 gauge required a couple of shots due to shot placement.

The usual rigs are 204, 223, and 22-250. I like the 223 just because factory ammo is cheap and easy to buy. Of the three, I would say the 22-250 is the best, even though I no longer own a rifle chambered for the cartridge. It is fast and packs a punch with less wind issues found with the lighter, 20 and under selections.

Back when coyotes had a real price on their hides I used a 6mmRem with 80gr hollowpoints. Usually just one small hole and the bullet opened up fast, rarely making an exit. Even when loaded for deer with a 100gr softpoint the bullet never expanded, leaving two small holes that were easy to deal with while stretching and drying.

Going to be trying out a .204 ruger here for these very soon. I’ve heard good things about the round and it’s ability to handle yotes.

The "round" doest matter as much as the actual bullet does.
I've shot 100's with various 22_250s. Quite a few different bullets.
I hate the vmax's!! Between myself and friends, they are the "woundingist" bullets I've ever seen!

I now shoot (2) custom built .17_204's for calling. They are both freeking amazing for both killing and saving fur. But again, the bullets I shoot outta them are the main factor.

BUT, if I were to only have ONE choice to cover all things coyotes, it would be a 22_250 using Sierras incredible 55 grain #1365.

I went back to the 22-250. 50gr ballistic just gets it done.

Interesting recommendation. I have used a lot of the 50 grain SPSX in the 223 and the 55 SPSX in the 22-250 with the same result but I never thought to try the 45 HP. I know they work good on gophers, never shot a yote with one. Nice accurate and inexpensive bullet so worth a try if I ever run short of the SPSX.

Another vote for this, love my .223’s because they are fun to shoot, flat, accurate, low recoil and have the cheapest factory ammo of any of the centrefires. Lots of surplus FMJ ammo on the market.

My favourite coyote pill on my .223’s is the Winchester 45 grain white box hollow points.

No exit holes and it drops coyotes where they stand. Likely the cheapest hunting rounds you can buy.
