The Black Death originated in China and reached Europe via the Silk Road and other trading routes. Mortality rates in many areas range from 40 to 60%.

I told my neighbour sorry, but I'm in the 50% survival pool.

Right?! I'm just a rig hand but even I know 'Bat soup' is probably going to cause some bad things.

Don't apologize, you are correct. There is a simple TED talk on overpopulation that basically debunks it and shows that the human population will not keep doubling as it has been. Also I believe Joe Rogan in one of his podcasts states that the entire world population could fit in the state of texas with everyone having 100 sqm or something like that. As for reaching our limits for food it isn't even close. Fish farms haven't reached even close to their potential. And there is billions of acres that can be used yet.

I've heard both the TED talk and Joe discuss this topic. The information to debunk the myth is readily available. It's not even that hard to wrap your head around.

Kind of puts it into perspective, locking down Quebec is a smaller population than Wuhan.

I don't know why this one has my attention so much.... Something is setting off alarms for me. Didn't get that with SARS or H1N1, swine flu, or bird flu, this one seems different....

High population density, combined with apparent ease of transmission, timed with mass migration, and high mutation rate of the coranovirus. 2-4 days for symptoms to even show up. At a current 3.4% death rate in those infected as reported (SARS was 10%), but the % keeps rising.... Nothing too extreme yet, but the potential is there for this to blow up. Glad to hear they locked out the city. 11 million people in Wuhan, and averages 30,000 people flying in and out every day

I'm guessing it might have to do with inundation.

No. I have never twittered or snap chat, i have facebook though. I have a BSc Ecology, which by definition, is the study of organisms and their interaction with the environment. Among many other things, I studied genetics, and biology at the UofC for 4 years after switching from 2 years of BSc Chemistry prior. It's a gut feeling on this one, by the exponential rise in confirmed cases, and possibly continuing on that exponential path, with all the other factors adding to the likelyhood. I don't listen to hype, I've been researching credible sources

Chinas locking down more cities and cancelling celebrations/gatherings all over the country. Two cases have popped up in Singapore overnight.

Default Anyone remember the......

Spanish flu carried by ..............livestock...sheep.....ducks...chicke ns ....pigs. These annual epidemics are likely mutated strains. The US wanted viable lung tissue to "study"[weaponize ]the Spanish Flu so they took samples back to the lab from Inuit in Alaska that died during the outbreak a century ago frozen in the perma-frost.What could possibly go wrong.

Easily. One article said 14 people who confirmed to have it were in an operating room on a patient having surgery. (Wasn’t known at the time that the patient had it) not sure how it works in China but operating rooms seem like they should have more precautions in place than a public space would.

Saw a report that they are saying this is transmitting via respiratory means so if that is accurate it is airborne. Just have to hope this isn't very lethal at this point. No way they stop a virus that is this far along if its as contagious as the common cold/flu. Still boggles my mind that planes aren't shut down from hot zones. Who cares about local transport shutdowns if the virus has already made it halfway round the world.

so report online said about 300,000 have left the night before they shutdown wuhan with travel restriction . they better start tracking those flights landings . the fatality rate for MERS its 30-40% , the SARS was 50% .

Actually MERS was 50%, SARS was 10% mortality rate

This one is around 3% so far

The fact that one person infected 14 doctors/nurses alone suggests this is HIGHLY contagious

Default 2 weeks incubation

With a 2 week incubation period, I'd say the cat's out of the bag, no matter where it started. Nobody is insulated in this world anymore. Planes with 100s of passengers are flying in and out of every country in the world every minute of every day.

I guess the virus belongs to the same class as the common cold so I assume it must be pretty damn contagious. One source is saying that by the 25th or 26th the numbers of obviously infected will explode. Video of the hospital in Wuhan shows the halls packed with people and another shows a victim who had collapsed on the street looking pretty much toasted. Another shows fighting going on in a food market as people scramble to stockpile grub. That's some scary stuff.
