Default Road Kill Owl

Here are some pics of a road kill owl I found on Friday near Camrose. Was about 10 feet from a road kill hawk in which I imagine the owl was eating the hawk before he met his fate. The hawk was too mangled to salvage.

He is in the hands of SRD now awaiting for my permit. Then off to Marco to do some of his magic.

Dang he sure is a beautiful bird.

Here is one I found alive in Northern BC Ken. Got hit by a car and was in the ditch so I stopped and put him in a cardboard box and took him to the vet. Had a broken back and they put him under. Sure would like to see pics of yours to give me an idea.

Lucky bugger!

Looks good man, and I can't wait to see what Marco magically transforms it into. What kind of owl is it? I'm thinking barred, but not sure.

Boss found one dead at work, its going to be a year at the taxidermists. Have one that uses my building for a cafeteria, leaves me lots of messes to clean up, but the occasional feather as well. Does anyone know if you need a permit to possess just owl feathers?

Immature Great Horned. Youngster are just starting to fly, so there'll probably be a lot more biting the dust and a few hawks as well.

Default Road kill

If you find dead wildlife on the road do you have to get a permit before removing it or can you take to F&W to get permit ? Will you get in trouble by being in possession to transport to F&W? Passed up some good birds wasn't sure.

Whew. Thanks Grizz, I feel better now! Had an experience with a young Swanson's last year I rather not repeat. Kindda like a bunch of drunken teenagers this time of year.

Honda, I'm glad you didn't let it go to waste. Very cool birds. I found a nest site while shed hunting earlier this spring, about 200 yards from one of my tree stands. Not the best pic, but I thought you'd like it.

You can keep shed feathers from protected birds without a permit. Same deal and law as shed antlers.

Nope I got this owl on friday and phoned SRD on Saturday and they told me to wait till Monday. Then when the officer inspected it today he said dang your fast. So I had to leave it there for them to do an inspection on it. Guess they look for foul play, not the case here.

Yup cool pic Treeguy.

Nice owl!!! Glad to see that I'm not the only one who keeps one eye on the road and one in the ditch. I have a great horned owl and a great grey owl. My bald eagle should be finished in a month, I'll try to post pics.

When I was very young and apprenticing taxidermist, my mentor had a source for great horned owls. The province would trap them over the fencing of the pheasant farm south of Saskatoon. That brought in about 3-4 owls a week through his practice. Interesting the variety of coloring and physical attributes. We quickly learnt though that summer birds, immatures and partial molts were not desirable as subjects.

Nope, you just make sure you take it there, as soon as you can.I believe theres a time limit that you have to take it there to get your permit. Im lazy to look it up right now.

Nice looking bird!

I have found 2 great horned owls dead on the side of the road in the past couple weeks. Both near the same spot in fact. The only problem is one his missing his head, though his body is in perfect shape. The other has his head, though his body is not in the best shape. Going to see if my taxi can work a little black magic and create a Frankenstein owl. Just waiting for the headless one to get a permit.

I am not sure of the time frame, but for both of mine I phoned F&W to inform them of my find, ask for permission to pick it up, and told them when I would bring it in.

Default great horned owl

Here is a photo I took last week at the Alberta Birds of Prey Center in Coaldale. If you have never stopped it is definitely worth a visit. Here is a photo of one of my sons holding a great horned owl - they are beautiful birds. It is a memorable experience to get so close and to be able to hold one.

Would very much like to see your pics especially the baldy. I tried to find one for years as my buddy had 3. No luck though.

I'm sure Marco won't have to try too hard, to do better than this.

There has to be a story behind the bald eagle??? I'd love to hear it, as I think that would be one of the nicest things to have on the wall. Absolutly beautiful birds. Your lucky!

I have a great horned owl passed down from my Grandfather, to my father, then to me. I'll charge up the camera tonight and try to post a pic. I am sure it has some of it's luster in the last 60 years, but I still like it.

OK Here it is. It used to actually creep me out a bit as a kid, because it's eyes followed you everywhere.
