Default Cypress Hills Elk Hunt

Well I've put in for my Cypress Hills elk hunt. Nov 7-10 I believe. I have a priority 12 so I'm almost a shoe in. Wondering if anyone has any advice they could pass on for my first serious elk hunt.

Don't get too picky on that hunt unless your fully prepared to come home with your tag. It's not what it used to be, but can still be a really fun hunt. Just keep your expectations realistic for the area your hunting.

Get off the roads and hunt the valleys. The south end of the park is a good place to start. You will catch them leaving the fields and heading into the valleys.

Does anyone have an idea as to how many are pulled out of the park each year?

Not all that many. The success rate in Cypress Hills runs 20-25% and has for many years. some years with bad weather are even lower. Last years stats show only a 3% success rate.

Actual hunting in the park has really declined the last few years due to the large population of Cougars. We regularly see far more Elk outside the park now than ever before. If you can locate the Elk before the first season opens it will give you a good idea of where they are travelling in and out of to feed. Often they hold up in small wooded areas no where close to being back in the park.

Had the first hunt a few years back, was disappointing to say the least. I got a bull but it was only 25%success rate those elk are educated.
PM me I have a sweet spot for you that helped another guy get one same spot on a late hunt.

Take care and good luck for you!

Is there information available other than the Hunter Harvest Surveys?

Ok, just wondering because the numbers you gave don't match any of the hunter harvest data.

But the hunter harvest data is rather bogus for that hunt anyway - which is rather ridiculous considering every kill is registered for the four park seasons so they know exactly how many animals are taken. I wonder why the F&W doesn't make that info available to the Hunter Harvest folks?

I agree. I have seen the hunt stats when the hunt is actually on but I don't see them anywhere after it is over. Sort of the same thing for camp Wainwright deer.
