Default Bison Hunting Alberta

Im trying to find out where you can and cannot hunt Buffalo in alberta. I was looking on line and know you cant inside the woodbuffalo park, but it also said there was a protected area in the northwest part of the province which I could not find the location of. My brother saw a couple of big bulls today while working up in the northwest, but he dosent hunt. Im pretty sure they are in an area where hunting is permitted. My wife wants one, so I might have to plan a trip.

I called fish and critters a few years ago on this subject. Their answer was that bison are not provincially protected, so as long as they're not in a national park, they're fair game anytime of year.

However, as you suggested, I'm suspicious as well and there must be more to it.

I'm pretty sure they're protected west of highway 35. There was lots in the area when i worked up there, kind of neat.

There is a herd of them near assumption , between high level and rainbow lake , that you cannot hunt.

Default Bison

I talked to fish and feathers last winter and JRS and Turbomulcher are right. They're trying to protect the herd west of 35 because as far as they know they are not infected with TB. There is TB in the wood buffalo herd. If you shoot one that you suspect to be infected be careful when your gutting and skinning as this is the most probable time to come in contact with TB. Other than that cook it well and you should be fine. Anyways that's what I was told. Probably wouldn't hurt to fire a phone call to fish and game in High Level or the Fort.

Exacty right. As they do not want bison from WB to wander to the herd west of 35 but open in between for this does not happen.

Just out of note. They did try at one time to populate bison in Jasper. I guess they lasted for a few years and simply just wandered off. They also tried the same in NFLD same thing there as well.

Well its true that they were put on an isolated island somewhere in NFLD, and I guess they just did not just wander off but the habitat was not suitible. There was a show on TV about it and how one big bull lived for years all by himself. Till he too was gone. Unless of course he swam to England. Man I thought you guys from the rock would know this.

Yes they found that bull washed up on shore like so many of the other ones, years after they thought they were all gone , island is just off shore from lamaline/ marystown , only assumption they came up with is slipped or in the heavy fog walked off the cliff?

Default constipated bull

hi 7 mm. you got me thinking about bison in northern ab. and i work at a ford dealership and a lot of our service customers work up in that country. i happened tp bump into one of these fellows yesterday and asked him if he'd ever seen any bison in his travels. he chuckled and proceeded to tell me quite a yarn about a herd up by zama city. it seems that a few of the gas plants were having trouble getting rid of sulpher and were piling it up next to the plant. it so happens that there's a herd of bison in the area and they took a liking to the sulpher, the only problem is sulpher really constipates bison. he said on one occaision he saw a big brute of a bull standing by the pile tail up, back arched, eyes bulging trying to reef out a "biggun" with absoultly no success. he must have been at it for quite a while because he was bellering like hell, in fact the fellow said he could still hear him a mile away as he checked a well site, roaring and moaning. i know that this is kind of sad, what with the effects of man on these wild animals, but you must admit it's kind of funny.
